Stony Batter Historic Reserve, at the eastern end of Waiheke Island, is named for its unusual rocky outcrops and is the site of extensive tunnels and gun emplacements dating back to WWII. This short walk combines fascinating history and the beautiful scenery Waiheke Island is famous for. It’s accessible all year round and is perfect for all ages.

Fort Stony Batter is a WWII Coastal Defence Fortress located at the Eastern end of Waiheke Island. The location was chosen for its strategic advantage of uninterrupted view of the Hauraki Gulf and shipping approach to Auckland city.

Lovely long (and short) walkways, WW2 gun emplacements and underground tunnels.

Located out at the far end of Waiheke Island, Stony Batter is both a former military fortification but also has unique rock formations that make you feel like you have been dropped into the Scottish Highlands. The walk is pretty suitable for all ages (smaller children might need to be carried) but can be quite muddy in Winter months. If you are heading out there recommend also heading to Man O War vineyard which is only a couple of kms down the road.
