This amazing structure is the tallest folly in the world at 77m. The view from the top is amazing and on the photo with woodland Dyer’s Cottage is actually visible in the top left corner opposite the distinctive roof of an old chapel. The tower can be seen from miles and is illuminated at night. It is open to climb 400 steps on summer Bank Holiday Monday’s from 11.00 to 16.00 at a small cost.

Follow in the footsteps of Anne Lister – in the scenes showing the sisters walking into Halifax on a cobbled road, they are in fact walking on Wakefield Gate. Just off Wakefield Gate is Wainhouse Tower, from which the opening shots of Halifax are filmed. The tower is open on bank holidays, when you can walk to the top and look out over the town.
