I haven't gotten a chance to take the tour of the US Capitol building but I've been told by everyone who has gone on it that it is awesome and better than the short one you get if you are able to get a tour of the Executive Mansion (The White House). The outside grounds are pretty.

It's FREE! There is really no need for reservations ahead of time, they do have two sections one for people with and one without, it moves at a steady pace. You can not walk around and explore on your own, you must be with the capital tour person. You are not allowed to bring in any food or…

A 20-30 min walk or a short drive. Library of Congress is maybe the highlight, along with enjoying the buildings especially in the evening light. Viewing of the Supreme Court sessions is also possible although the queue can be long.
