Stay in a private, modern room overlooking view of the bend in the James River that named Richmond - spectacular shower with 6 heads to relax you. Located in Church Hill is a 18th/19th Century section of Richmond. This Italianate house, built in 1879 - updated 2013, is located where bankers and merchants built their stately homes. It's back porch overlooks the James River and is near Libby Park, monuments, and cobble stone streets. Walk to a variety of restaurants.
Second floor bedroom with private porch, high on a hill, overlooking the James River -- an occasional eagle will fly overhead, but while waiting for the glimpse of an eagle, the gardens and view of the James River will take your breath away. Besides being a lovely home to stay (please see pics), there is also an exceptionally landscaped yard to enjoy wine and cheese on a gorgeous evening. Living room, dining room have working gas fireplaces and are available for small social gatherings for a fee -- glassware and dishes provided for up to 15 -- serving platter provided. Kitchen is updated and well equipped for your event.
Church Hill is a community of restored historic homes. It has recently been named as one of the up and coming communities in the US! Many local restaurants to choose from, with-in walking distance. One was recently distinguished with the James Beard Award! Each morning a special treat will await you--a pastry from one of our most famous local bakeries that was written up in Bon Appetit Magazine and the New York Times. Gluten free options available, just let me know your preference. This is truly is a very special area to stay! Tor train buffs, are active train tracks, at the bottom of the hill - fun to watch and hear.
  • Diane welcomed us into her home and was incredibly hospitable from the start. Her house is a gem - very good find located in a quaint, quiet area adjacent to Libby Hill Park. Diane is an accomplished artist, and my husband and I were so happy to acquire a beautiful art piece to commemorate our trip to Virginia. She was also gracious enough to allow us to do laundry; we were in town to escape Hurricane Florence and living out of a suitcase. Richmond is a special place for my husband and I, and Diane was such a great host that made the trip that much more meaningful. Will definitely book again in the future!

  • Diane is in a lovely area of historic Richmond and her house is a part of that history. It is close to many local cafes, restaurants and bars. The view is very nice. Walking the neighborhood is a delight. The view from the upstairs private porch is a great place to get a perspective of the area.

    Connie2018-10-18T00:00:00Z
  • From the moment we arrived until we left, Diane provided a delightful and fun experience! The property is very lovely, the neighborhood is charming and the views from the deck are spectacular. Diane also provided several very thoughtful "extras" during our stay - cannot recommend this rental more highly!

  • Lovely place with an amazing view. Within walking distance from Main Street Station. Diane was a very accommodating host.

  • Diane is a sweet host. In the morning she had breakfast sandwiches ready for us. The house is historic with lots of charm. The view from our room was great. Especially the sunset.

  • Our Airbnb stay in Richmond, with Diane, was great! From the moment we arrived, Diane was friendly and welcoming. Her two adorable dogs also greeted us with great enthusiasm. We immediately felt right at home! Diane gave us a tour of her gorgeous historical Italianate home, while encouraging us to think of it as our home for the week. Our room was simply charming! It was furnished with some lovely antiques. The shower in the bathroom was incredible, with numerous shower heads! I didn't want to get out! For us, the highlight of our suite was the private covered porch, just beyond the French doors. The view of Diane's garden below, and the James River just beyond, were absolutely mesmerizing. On several rainy afternoons, our perfect entertainment was relaxing on the porch, with cool breezes, a glass of wine, and a good book. The home was in a beautiful neighborhood, nestled on a quiet cul-de-sac with other beautiful historical homes, cobblestone streets, and gas lanterns! Truly, it felt like a wonderful step back in time. Diane was happy to suggest places to visit, favorite neighborhood restaurants, and she also gave us plenty of reading material about the area. She even spoiled us with yummy breakfast treats each morning from a special bakery. We had some great conversations. Diane is a very interesting person, with a fun, vibrant lifestyle. She was certainly attentive to any questions or needs we had. We especially enjoyed her explanations of the fine art paintings and photography covering the walls in her home. Diane generously shared a bit of her knowledge about her passion for pastels, and invited me into her studio, where she introduced various aspects and "how-tos" of working with pastels. Talent is evident in her own work with pastels! There wasn't a single negative about our stay at Diane's Airbnb. No white glove needed. Cleanliness was impeccable. She welcomed our use of the kitchen, even allowing us to make dinner for our son and daughter-in-law one evening. We whole-heartedly reccommend this bnb to anyone! In fact, we hope to return in warmer weather, when Diane's prize gardens are in bloom!

Welcome to Historic Church Hill of Richmond. My home is conveniently located 6 miles from the airport, 4 miles from the raceway for you race fans, 1 mile from beautiful Main St. train station. I have lived in Church Hill for 3 years and the area is fantastic for experiencing all that Richmond has to offer. The Capital Trail is a short walk or ride away for all you cyclists. Many outstanding restaurants are walk-able including a few recognized by the James Beard Foundation. Please come stay!
Fully renovated Historic 1877 home decorated with a mix of transitional and antique furnishings. The outside spaces are truly relaxing whether you are sitting on the front porch watching the neighborhood activity or enjoying the oasis in the backyard with privacy fence, shade sail, sectional couch, tiki torches, dining table and manicured lawn.
Historic Church Hill sits above Richmond and is filled with wonderful restaurants, parks, architecture, amazing views of the James River, and of coarse...churches! St. John's Church, 1741, is just 3 blocks from my home and is the site where Patrick Henry gave his Liberty or Death speech with George Washington and Thomas Jefferson in attendance. They offer tours and reenactments, but are also very welcoming if you would like to attend a Sunday service. St. John is just one of many churches...as you walk the Hill, just look for the many steeples. The Edgar Allan Poe Museum is a short walk. Other areas to be explored are Shockhoe Slip and the Bottom. The Cap to Cap is a walking/biking trail that links Richmond to Williamsburg. It is very easily accessed from my home and a quick walk down the Hill. Breweries that are less than 2 miles away, Stone Brewing and Triple Crossing Beer.
  • You're in for a treat at Cheryl's home. A warm and welcoming host of a home that has historic roots and modern, sleek amenities. The location is close to a great selection of restaurants, bars, and parks (all walkable). Parking and check-in were a breeze. Of my recent stays, this far exceeded my expectations and is among the best I've experienced through Airbnb.

    Kyle2019-06-03T00:00:00Z
  • Cheryl's place was located near some of the best restaurants in Richmond. We arrived by bike and she was very accommodating with her space to help us store the bike properly. She graciously opens her house and her lovely yard to visitors, but also provides a spacious room if you want a private retreat. We stayed for only one night but would visit again.

    Marcia2019-06-21T00:00:00Z
  • Cheryl and her home are both pitch perfect! She is a delight and her home is an historic wonder which she has decorated beautifully. The bed is one of the most comfortable I've slept on--and I've slept on a lot! Everything about Cheryl and her place was a perfect delight.

    Catherine2019-06-09T00:00:00Z
  • Great, hospitable, and clean. An awesome host

    Stephen2019-05-19T00:00:00Z
  • Cheryl’s place is exactly as pictured! Check-in and check-out were super easy. Cheryl was quick to reply/communicate with us on any questions we had! The house is close to town, so Uber and driving to and from restaurants downtown was quick and easy. Beautifully well kept home on a quiet street. So charming and clean with a wonderful front porch to sip your morning coffee on! Bed is extremely comfy too. Hope to stay here again someday!

    Holly2019-06-02T00:00:00Z
  • Cheryl was amazing host. House was adorable and super clean. Location was great!!

    Melissa2019-08-16T00:00:00Z
  • Cheryl is a wonderful host! The room was huge and really nice, great amenities, great location, had a great stay!

    Greg2019-08-18T00:00:00Z
  • Cheryl was a great host! My husband and I are considering moving to Richmond and we stayed at Cheryl’s for our first initial scope-out trip. Since Cheryl was going to be out of town during our stay, she offered ahead of time that we could pick her brain via email. She provided a really thoughtful response about her experience in the city, and gave us a bunch of recommendations for restaurants in the neighborhood. Our favorite was Union Market, which is right around the corner — go during brunch! The neighborhood was very quiet, and the house was just as described and as in the pictures. Cheryl left great directions for checkin and checkout and also was quick to respond to questions we had during our stay. Would recommend!

Cozy duplex in the heart of historical Church Hill, Richmond. The bottom level is available for guest, however please be courteous to the tenants upstairs, and this is a temporary home when not booked. There is a restaurant and bakery on the corner, plus historical parks in 5mins walking distance. Shockoe Bottom, full of bars and great eats, is .5 miles away. VCU/VUU/Downtown is a 1/1.5 miles away. A great location if you want to be close to the downtown, yet far enough for peace and quiet.
The neighborhood is typically a quiet peaceful area with friendly neighbors. There are a couple of doctors on the street, so I’m case of emergency they are present. There are about 6 restaurants in walking distance so plenty to eat. There is also access to the highway pretty close.
  • This was such a lovely stay for our time in Richmond! The location was incredible, and we felt very at home. We would recommend this stay for any future travelers!

    Laura2019-07-01T00:00:00Z
  • Great host! Would highly recommend this place! It was very clean and in a great location!

    Nissa2019-07-06T00:00:00Z
  • Thanks for hosting, Doni! This place is very nice and cute apartment, closed to everywhere in Richmond. (Restaurant or bars are only 10-15 mins for driving.) Street parking is also very easy. This was the first trip with my puppy so I was a little bit worried, but there were a lot of doggie toys, bowl, crate, gate, etc in the apartment (even we brought our own!) so my puppy enjoyed so many toys.

    Yealim2019-07-14T00:00:00Z
  • Doni's place was really nice, and I loved the blue and orange UVA touches! The neighborhood is great, and I would highly recommend staying with him if you have the chance.

  • This spot was perfect! Super cute, tons of room, and the hosts were very quick to reply and get everything set up.

    Paige2019-06-11T00:00:00Z
  • Doni's place is in a great neighborhood and walking distance to a bunch of great restaurants and bars.

    Amy2019-07-16T00:00:00Z
  • Doni was very responsive and courteous, and was able to accommodate a morning check in for me. His place spacious and located in a good location with plenty of street parking available during the day (the street gets crowded when everyone gets home from work but I'm sure there's still available parking nearby). I loved all the UVA decor too! It wasn't as clean as I expected it to be from staying at several other Airbnbs.

This is a completely restored house built in 1860. It feels very homey and inviting because you can feel the family love, in family pictures, artwork from locals and Haiti, and eclectic furnishings. It is close to restaurants, bus, airport, city center, parks, and museums. You’ll love it because of the art and the comfy bed, but mostly the location. It is in a historic district, with a view of the James River and Libby Hill Park. It is good for couples, family reunions, and business travelers.
The back garden is a wonderful place to entertain, and the dining room table seats ten. The kitchen has a 40's look, but all the modern conveniences. Sitting on the front porch at sunset is very special, and you can see across the James River. There are bicycles in the shed if you want to cruise the neighborhood, or the Virginia Capital trail near by.
Church Hill is Richmond's oldest neighborhood. Soak up the history of Church Hill, with its cobblestone, gas-lamp lit streets, and period architecture. Walking in the neighborhood is very safe, and there are 16 cafes, bakeries, or restaurants within walking distance.
  • What a cool spot! Great location across from Libbey hill park.

    Edward2018-04-16T00:00:00Z
  • This is a historic house with an incredible view of the James River. We did not directly interact with Jessica, but the house was fully prepared for our arrival and we had a great time exploring its eccentricities. It comfortably slept 4 adults. We would definitely stay again.

    Tyler2016-09-04T00:00:00Z
  • What a beautiful house! I booked this airbnb for my parents who were visiting Richmond and it turned out to be a great place for them for a snowy weekend. You really can't beat the view/location, right on Libby Hill Park, in my favorite RVA neighborhood of Church Hill. The house itself is very homey, and decorated lovingly. You are clearly staying in a family's house, and Jessica has done a great job of keeping the historical feel of the property. Overall, great place, great experience!

    Rachel2017-01-08T00:00:00Z
  • This is an amazing home in a beautiful historic location and centrally located. It is completely as described. The house itself is an experience with each room containing interesting decor and wonderful trinkets which will have you spending time looking, wondering and admiring. There is a beautiful garden and excellent sound system which will have you sitting on the patio and relaxing with a beverage in peaceful serenity. Definitely worth a stay !

  • A historic home in a great neighborhood with a fantastic view of the James River. Easy to access all the sights in Richmond from the home.

    Terry2017-03-19T00:00:00Z
  • The home was lovingly appointed and very well kept and clean. The home's location was nearby a lovely park and walkable to several desirable locales. Throughout our host, Jessica, was communicative and responsive to questions and flexibly kind. The home feels personal, warm, and inviting. Great space for us. The home has one full bedroom and a foldout bed. My brother and his fiancée slept comfortably on the fold-out and the bed was perfect for my husband and myself. Overall, would definitely return here in the future!

    Janelle2016-08-21T00:00:00Z
  • Jessica was extraordinary prompt, incredibly informative, and her home is delightful. The location is amazing with every sunset being a beautiful, perfect view of the city, and it's wonderfully located for wine to strike out and explore. I cannot recommend her place enough, and I will definitely be coming back the next time I'm in Richmond.

One private bedroom with shared bath located in the heart of Richmond’s historic Church Hill district. Very close the VCU’s Medical Campus.Walk to historic St. John’s Church or any one of our amazing bakeries or restaurants. Enjoy the afternoon strolling through Libby Hill Park, overlooking the city. Room includes one queen sized bed, large closet space and a refinished dresser for additional storage. *Please note that host owns an indoor cat.
Beautiful historic district with many unique and notable restaurants. Walk to WPA Bakery and enjoy a fresh cup of coffee in the morning along with one of their delicious pastries. Visit St. John’s Church where Patrick Henry gave his famous “Give me liberty , or give me death” speech. Enjoy New Zealand style hand pies at Proper Pie, one of our most popular lunch spots! Spend the evening dining at James Beard nominated restaurants such as The Roosevelt or Dutch & Co. which has been featured in Food & Wine. Additionally, you are just five minutes away from Richmond’s Capital Trail.
  • Katarina's house was very nice and in a great location. Great, easy communication with host. Space was very nice and nicely decorated. Very friendly cat on premises. Very clean with a few thoughtful touches. Would recommend to anyone visiting Richmond and interested in the Church Hill area. I won't hesitate to stay again if I should need to be in the area.

    Bo2018-05-20T00:00:00Z
  • This townhouse is located very conveniently in the city-it is a pleasant stroll to many delicious bakeries and restaurants, as well as to the church where Patrick Henry gave his speech. It has easy access to Broad Street, which allows quick trips to anywhere in the city as well as the highway. The residential, safe feel of the townhouse was amplified by the clean, well decorated accommodations, and every room was comfortable, beautiful, and relaxing to be in. I’m allergic to cats, but the host did an excellent job of cleaning the bedroom where I stayed and I had no trouble with the allergy. We stayed here for a weekend while visiting colleges in Richmond, and this beautiful place gave us an immersed view of the city. Overall a lovely visit! -- :):)

    Katherine2018-04-01T00:00:00Z
  • Katarina's restored row house is in an historic Richmond neighborhood just a few blocks from the church in which Patrick Henry delivered his famous speech, and near Libby Hill Park with its wonderful view of the James River and beyond. The neighborhood is, shall we say, eclectic, with a few rundown homes, but most in good shape and many lovingly restored (like Katarina's). We ate at 3 restaurants within 4 blocks of the house and can recommend all 3 - Anthony's for pizza and Italian (catch the Date Night Special on Wednesday), Hill Cafe (really good classic pub fare), and WPA Bakery (breakfast and pastries). Katarina is a lovely hostess who makes a great cup of French press coffee, and the cat is friendly. The bed is comfy, the house is spotless and nicely decorated, and the location is great. My wife and I loved it, but be aware, it's not going to be to everyone's liking. You're in the front room of the house, but it's a quiet residential street. The room is up a flight of narrow, fairly steep stairs. If you're a light sleeper you should know that the floors creak (hey, the place is over a hundred years old). But if that kind of character appeals to you, as it did to us, you'll enjoy your stay. We would definitely return the next time we're in Richmond.

    Ken2018-06-09T00:00:00Z
  • Beautiful historic/decorated home close to lots of restaurants and awesome brewery. (Stone Brewery Richmond : Uber $7-10) we got to park directly infront & truly felt welcomed. The kitty cat Butters was an absolute sweet pea. Thanks for the great stay!!

  • Everything was perfect

    Austin2019-09-08T00:00:00Z
  • I had a great stay at Katarina's. The bedroom is in the front of the house but it is very quiet, you can't hear any outside noise. The room was clean and the bed was super comfortable! Katarina was very nice and quick to respond to any questions.

    Erica2019-04-14T00:00:00Z
  • Katarina's spic and span and stylish place is very likely one of the best deals you can find in Richmond for AirBnB right now. Not only was she extremely communicative, she also gave me the freedom of flexibility while letting me feel like her space was truly mine as well. Wish I could leave her seven stars instead of five. Also, Church Hill is just getting cooler by the day - totally recommend anyone to visit this quaint neighborhood if you get the chance.

    Delia2018-05-13T00:00:00Z
  • My friend and I took a last minute trip to Richmond and Katarina was incredibly accommodating on short notice. She also helped us sort out bike storage and offered tips on where to go. Her place is beautiful, clean and in an ideal location near downtown, close to great spots like Sub Rosa and Saison. She also has an awesome, super friendly cat who greeted us in the morning. I would definitely recommend staying at Katarina's place!

My place is ten minutes walk from downtown, in the Churchill Historic District. Jefferson Park is across the street with workout equipment overlooking the city. There are many restaurants in easy walking distance with the famous Alamo BBQ just a block away. You’ll love the neighborhood and the cozy bed with blackout conditions when you close the doors. The neighbors are friendly but are sometimes noisy. My place is good for couples, solo adventurers, and business travelers.
I work from my home and value open space and clean lines over possessions. I spent a lot of time in Japan and absorbed some the aesthetics of home decor there.
Churchill is an old neighborhood with distinct architecture and history. Patrick Henry gave his famous "Give me liberty, or give me death" speech just up the street at St. John's Church. The streets are lined with full trees and the sidewalks are paved with funky old bricks. Neighbors always say hello. There are several acclaimed restaurants within easy walking distance like the Roosevelt, Proper Pie, Alamo BBQ, and Dutch & Company. You can also walk down to the clubs, bars, and restaurants of Shockoe Bottom.

Most of them them this year have been visiting medical professionals, or film industry folk. We book very quickly.
Church Hill has a hip "vibe" with many local restaurants and bakeries within walking distance. It is like a village, with wide brick sidewalks, gas-lights, and neighbors who come out like spring flowers to sit on their porches in evening breezes, or help each other out when snow might fall. We have lived here for 17 or so years, and would not want to live anywhere else in Richmond.
  • Jon and Jean were fantastic hosts. The apartment is spacious, inviting, and centrally located in Church Hill. I would recommend the apartment for extended business trips of any sort.

  • Leiligheten var perfekt, og over all forventning.

  • I have enjoyed staying in unique Airbnb spaces in different parts of the world, and this was my most wonderful Airbnb experience by far. The apartment is beautiful, comfortable and private. The area is scenic and quaint with easy walking access to everything Richmond has to offer. And the hosts are friendly and fascinating. I highly recommend staying here. I stayed for three months, and I found much to love about the hosts, the space, and the area.

  • Beautiful, clean, and an amazing location - a great combination of historic elegance with all the modern amenities. Jon and Jean were super conscientious on all aspects of my stay. Highly recommended.

  • Jean and Jon are very attentive hosts: quick to respond to any questions or problems, and ready with suggestions for maximizing your enjoyment of Church Hill and of Richmond. The apartment was wonderfully clean and has a lot of storage space. There's no lack of amenities (unless you want an oven). :-)

  • Jean and Jon are wonderful hosts! The apartment is perfect and I highly recommend choosing it as a place to stay. The apartment is close to downtown and walking distance to groceries, shops and restaurants.

  • We recently rented Jon and Jean's apartment for a month for my son's in laws to stay to help with the birth of my grandson. The apartment could not have worked out any better. The location, size, cleanliness and comfortableness were outstanding. Jon and Jean were very helpful and kind. The communication was great. I would strongly recommend this apartment to anyone wanting a weekend getaway, week's vacation, or for even the whole month! Thank you both for everything. Gregg

I love this space. It is airy, bright, simple and full of plants. It feels like a hideaway from the main street. Ideal for a couple or for someone traveling for business.
The apartment is lofted. The sleeping area is upstairs with the bathroom adjacent to the bedroom. Downstairs offers a daybed that has a full twin, however, there isn't much of a separation between this sleeping arrangement and the upstairs. If you are bringing a 3rd, be comfortable with being able to hear one another. There is a small sitting area outside which you are welcome to use so long as you are conscientious of the neighbors.
Church Hill is a beautiful thing. It is a world between right now, as it is experiencing a major growth spurt. There are options for breakfast, lunch, coffee, dinner, snacks! Really it has something for everyone. There are 3 parks in walking distance that offer an aerial view of the city.

1894 Victorian row house in RVA's oldest neighborhood. A short walk to historic St. John's Church, parks, bakeries, coffee shops and renowned restaurants. 15 minutes from the airport and less than one mile from downtown, this is a perfect spot for business travelers or tourists looking to explore Richmond. Rental includes use of kitchen and common spaces including a charming back garden. There are 2 cats in the home.
This home is in a very walkable neighborhood but also has convenient access to interstates. Just minutes from downtown, the James River and many other Richmond attractions.
Church Hill is Richmond's oldest neighborhood, taking its name from St. John's Episcopal Church, built in 1742. This was the site of Patrick Henry's famous "Give me liberty or give me death speech." The church is just 2 blocks from this rental. Church Hill overlooks the city and James River with spectacular sunset views from both Libby Hill and Chimborazo Parks. The neighborhood still features brick sidewalks and some cobblestone streets. Architectural styles feature Greek Revival, Queen Anne and Italianate. Historic homes feature ornate wooden porches and ironwork. The neighborhood is a diverse one with a strong community feel. Restaurants to visit include The Hill Cafe, The Roosevelt, Dutch and Company, Metzgers, Union Hill, Proper Pie, and Anthony's on the Hill. WPA and Captain Buzzy's Beanery serve coffee and baked goods.
  • 5 Stars all around!! Big fan of the shower, even bigger fan of the back garden. Can’t go wrong with the location, it was a lovely stay in Richmond. We will be back!!

  • Highly recommend staying at Lynn's home. The room is spacious and luxurious, Lynn's had everything we needed. My husband and I had such as lovely stay and Lynn is a wonderful and thoughtful host. The home is historical and the furnishings are absolutely stunning. We felt so at home and comfortable. We would love to stay again when we come back!

  • Great location! Only a mile or so from Downtown. Safe, clean, and laid back. Also 2 lovely cats and a sweet dog!

    Jake2017-09-07T00:00:00Z
  • Lynn was the consummate host. Extremely attentive and responsive to all communications. We had to revise our ETA to Richmond a number of times, and Lynn was happy to accommodate. The house is beautiful and very stylish. Great bed, fantastic bathroom with an awesome shower, and very easy check-in. Lynn's Church Hill neighborhood is historic and charming and very walkable. Great coffee place right next door and lots of top-tier restaurants a stone's throw away. All in all a fantastic place to stay with a very warm and enthusiastic host.

    Davis2018-02-17T00:00:00Z
  • All we needed was a convenient place with two bedrooms to spend a night on a business trip and we came away with so much more! The location couldn't be better for taking in many of Richmond's historic sights, and great restaurants, on foot. Short drive from the airport and still within walking distance of the downtown. Lynn's home is itself historic, spacious and lovingly decorated. And both she and her pets made us feel right at home too. Will definitely stay with Lynn again next time I'm in Richmond!

    Jeffrey2017-09-09T00:00:00Z
  • Lynn is a great host! Her home is laid out perfectly for an Airbnb for up to 3 guests. Everything was neat, clean, and ready for us.

Church Hill, also known as the St. John's Church Historic District, is an Old and Historic District in Richmond, Virginia. This district encompasses the original land plat of the city of Richmond. Church Hill is the eastern terminus of Broad Street, a major east-west thoroughfare in the Richmond metropolitan area. The name Church Hill is often used to describe both the specific historic district and the larger general area in the East End encompassing other neighborhoods such as Union Hill, Chimborazo, Fairmount, Peter Paul, Woodville, etc. St. John's Church Historic District U.S. National Register of Historic Places U.S. Historic district Virginia Landmarks Register St johns episcopal church richmond va.jpg St.John's Episcopal Church, Richmond, Virginia Church Hill is located in VirginiaChurch Hill Show map of Virginia Show map of the US Show all Location Bounded roughly by 22nd, Marshall, 32nd, Main, and Franklin Sts. and Williamsburg Ave., Richmond, Virginia Coordinates 37°31′45″N 77°25′5″W Area 100 acres (40 ha) Architect Byrd, William Architectural style Greek Revival, Federal NRHP reference # 70000884 (original) 90002097 [1] (increase) VLR # 127-0192 Significant dates Added to NRHP September 15, 1970 Boundary increase January 17, 1991 Designated VLR June 2, 1970; April 17, 1990[2] Contents History Edit Early United States, Civil War, and Revolution Edit Church Hill is known for Chimborazo Park, where the largest American Civil War Hospital was located. It is also known as the site of Virginia's second revolutionary convention, where Patrick Henry gave his "Give me liberty or give me death" speech in St. John's Episcopal Church, Richmond, Virginia in 1775. 20th Century Edit On Friday, October 2, 1925, a 4,000-foot Chesapeake and Ohio railroad single track tunnel built during Reconstruction collapsed under Church Hill. The Church Hill Tunnel collapse occurred during refurbishment works, killing 3 or 4 and engulfing a work train complete with a 4-4-0 engine #231 and 10 flat cars. The tunnel was closed and filled-in after the collapse. In the July 2006, a coalition of officials and historical groups made plans to remove the buried engine. If recovered, it would be displayed at the Virginia Historical Society in Richmond. Some borings were made into the tunnel from above for examination by camera. Only murky water was found, whereupon further work was delayed by city permitting issues. The bricked-in entrance of the collapsed tunnel can still be seen at the south-east end of the alley just north of Marshall Street, on 18th Street. Douglas Wilder, the first African American to have been elected governor of a U.S. state1, was born and raised in Church Hill. In the 1970s, murder rates decreased overall in Richmond, Virginia, but instances of murder in Church Hill doubled.[3] 21st Century Edit In recent years, Church Hill has undergone gentrification and now experiences much lower rates of crime than it did in the late 20th century. Church Hill is home to many small businesses, including restaurants, bars, hair salons, and boutiques. In 2014, Church Hill was named one of the "10 Hot Food Neighborhoods Around the U.S" by Zagat. In 2015, Redfin included Church Hill in a roundup of most walkable neighborhoods in the city—while Richmond was named #9 in their list of Top 10 Most Walkable Mid-Sized Cities. Preservation Efforts Edit The Church Hill neighborhood experienced serious physical decline during the 1950s, owing mostly to absentee landlords. The Historic Richmond Foundation was established in 1956 by Elisabeth Scott Bocock out of concern for "saving and enhancing the setting for St. John's Church."[4] In 1957, encouraged in large part by Historic Richmond, City Council created a historic district ordinance while simultaneously adopting the St. John's Church Old and Historic District. The preservation of Church Hill marked the formal beginning of the preservation movement in Richmond.[5] Notable Structures, Monuments and Parks Edit St. John's Episcopal Church (Richmond, Virginia) Adams Double House[6] Chimborazo Park Elmira Shelton House Jefferson Park Libby Hill Park Pohlig Brothers Building Richmond Hill (a/k/a the Adams-Taylor House or Monte Maria) Confederate Soldiers and Sailors Monument St. John's Mews Superior Warehouse Woodward House WRVA Building Church Hill is the oldest most historic area of Richmond. • This beautiful apartment in a stately Richmond home is one of the nicest Airbnb's I've ever stayed in. It is supremely comfortable and stylish, filled with lovely, thoughtful touches and located in an interesting, vibrant neighborhood that has restaurants and coffee shops nearby. I walked every morning, enjoying this historic area. Jeanie is an excellent, charming host. I highly recommend!

  • Jeanie's apartment is beautiful. I can honestly say it's the nicest place we've ever booked with Airbnb. It's cosy, super comfortable, beautifully decorated and furnished, great beds, lovely bathroom/shower & a well equipped kitchen with everything you need. The location in Church Hill is excellent. It's a fascinating part of the city with so much to see on your doorstep. We ate locally, at the fantastic Hill Café, and hired bikes nearby at RVA Cycle. The civil war museum at Tredegar is also very close. I would definitely book Jeanie's place again.

  • Perfect spot for our (too short) trip to Richmond. The neighborhood is lovely, historic, and walkable to downtown, and the suite is easily accessible yet private feeling. I liked that there were two beds - it was a great set-up for a trip with my mom. Thanks for sharing your cool home, Jeanie!

    Carly2019-06-10T00:00:00Z
  • Jeanie’s place was great! Church Hill is our favorite Richmond neighborhood and Jeanie’s place is right in the heart of it all. There was plenty of space and privacy in this historic home. Jeanie was also quick to answer our questions and made the checkin and checkout seamless. We will definitely consider Jeanie’s home for our future Richmond trips!

Welcome to The Best Yellow House on the Hill! Enjoy the amenities AND the location- right across the street from the sprawling Chimborazo Park, where you get arguably the best sunset in Richmond. Amenities include (but not limited to) plenty of parking, front porch sitting, small fenced in patio and washer and dryer. We look forward to hosting you in the historical heart of RVA! ****We also speak Spanish****
This apartment is spacious yet cozy. The charm stems from it's historical bones- the original hardwood floors are a tell-tale sign that the space has been lived in and loved. The bedrooms are large with high ceilings and plenty of storage space for your belongings. Enjoy the view of the sunset from the front porch with a beverage in hand and then spend your evening on the back patio. If you bring your pets along, the park across the street is perfect for throwing the frisbee! Take a stroll through the surrounding streets and admire the architecture, soak in the history- Church Hill has one of the most strict approval processes for home renovations, so most of the houses you see are restored to how they were originally built. We want you to feel like you are home. We want your stay to be part of your experience. Staying at The Best Yellow House on the Hill is the best of both worlds: comfortable lodging and location. We look forward to hosting you!

  • Sue was a lovely welcoming host. The apartment was a perfect little getaway for the two of us. The nicest AirBnB we've stayed at in Richmond. The bedroom is light and cheery with a comfortable bed and nice linens. The light filled kitchen is well stocked for cooking- pots, and dishes, and with nice breakfast things. The living room was a warm relaxed space where we enjoyed hanging out in at the end of the day.

    Licia2018-03-25T00:00:00Z
  • Sue’s guesthouse was booked for a week for parents who drove in from across the country. Sue was so accommodating and let me get in before them to add a few snacks to the kitchen. Sue had also already added some breakfast options as well! My parents were so pleased with their stay, their experience with Sue, and they said they wish they had stayed there in the past when visiting! Definitely a great location, great value, adorable little patio off the bedroom, and close to all the Church Hill favorites.

    Katie2018-05-19T00:00:00Z
  • Sue's place was excellent in every way. The apartment was so cozy and well decorated, and Sue is a total delight to talk to. The location in Church Hill was also perfect for exploring and was so close to everything we needed. We will definitely be coming back

  • Sue's charming suite in the historic Church Hill was one of the best Airbnb's we've ever stayed in. Her hospitality is unmatched - she even had a little starter breakfast of two eggs and coffee waiting for us in the fridge. Access to the house is easy with our own personal entrance and any and all questions were answered by Sue with lovely recommendations of notable local hotspots for pastries, sight seeing, and other Richmond happenings. If you want a classic Virginia experience with the southern charm of a century house owned by a witty and sharp lady, this is your place!!! Would recommend to anyone and we WILL be staying here during our next trip to Richmond!! Thanks Sue!!

  • Gorgeous space - the location in Church Hill is nice, and the house itself is beautiful! Everything you could possibly need is provided here for you - with extra touches all around. Amazing space - would love to come back! The only thing I would note (NOT to the fault of the host!) is that because the house is a duplex, you can hear the neighbors pretty clearly through the wall until around 9pm. Other than that, the place is pristine, cozy, and so welcoming. Host responses were quick, and she even accommodated a last-minute request to add another night on to the stay! Definitely recommend staying here if you’re visiting Richmond

Comfy private room and private bath in my home on a quiet street in Church Hill. Easy walking distance to several good restaurants, bakeries, coffee shops, and a little market/bar. Convenient to downtown business district and I-95. Must love cats!
NEED TO KNOW: Cat-lovers only need apply! My two cats, Tigger and Nugget, roam the house. You may or may not choose to let the cats in your room; it's up to you! If you don't want them in there, just keep your door closed. The yellow guest room is furnished with a full-size bed, nightstands with reading lamps, and a secretary desk/dresser. It is small but cozy, and the bed is very comfortable. While I do keep some of my belongings in the closet in that room, there is still plenty of space in there for you to hang your clothes and store a couple of suitcases. The bathroom next to your bedroom is for your exclusive use during your visit.
My home is a 3 bedroom/1.5 bathroom detached row house on a quiet street in Church Hill. • Excellent house. in a great location. House was spotless and instructions were thorough and easy to understand. A pleasure to stay there.

  • My father and I loved staying at this house in Richmond's Church Hill neighborhood. The house is easy to find, we had no difficulty with parking, and there are so many good restaurants within walking distance. Kathi's communication was great and she had plenty of recommendations for where to eat and things to try. Check in was easy with her instructions. Both beds were very comfortable, and the house had all the supplies and amenities that you could want. We didn't cook - there were far too many great restaurants within walking distance - but all the supplies are there if you wanted. The house is very clean, and had some interesting books on the history of the area as well as restaurant menus, tourism leaflets etc. We enjoyed sitting out on both the front and back porches, but, as one other review had said, there is still some major construction work going on at the house next door, so if you are around during the daytime, this may be disruptive. We were out and about for most of the daytime so were not disturbed too much by the noise.

    Kirsti2019-05-28T00:00:00Z

Catch up on the latest chapter while sitting in the screened-in porch of a house that exudes kindness, harmony, and happiness. The home was built in 1895 and features original pine hardwood floors and vibrant colors throughout.
This is an old home located on a quiet block in historic Church Hill. We love our home and hope that you will too! It was built in 1895 for the son of the of Mr and Mrs Hudson, their house is right next door! The flow of the home is wonderful and gets great natural light. The entire house excluding the bathrooms, has original pine hardwood floors. We ask that you remove your shoes when coming in the house to help preserve these floors. On the first floor you have the living room, dining area with bar (wine fridge), half bath: with washer and dryer, and kitchen (gas stove, fridge, dishwasher, and microwave: hidden in the wooden cabinet) with our favorite place just off the kitchen, the screened in back porch! We enjoy our morning coffee and watch the birds, so peaceful. Speaking of coffee, please help yourself to the coffee and all the fix'ns! Had a long journey, want a sip of something or a snack we have a few of our favorites in the fridge for you! On the second floor is the master bedroom: which has a king bed (Tuft and Needle) and a small reading porch off the bedroom. The second bedroom has a queen bed. All of our bed linens are from our newly launched Mettā Home brand! Egyptian cotton sheets, organic blankets, and linen duvet covers to name a few. If you like them you can buy them and we will ship them to your home! In between both bedrooms is our den, where you can watch TV: Netflix, Hulu, and Amazon. The full bathroom is also located on the 2nd floor. We are in walking distance to soooo much! and an easy Uber or Lyft to downtown, the Fan, Carytown, and the trendy micro brew haven Scott's Addition. Have a pup that you cant leave at home? Please message me for inquiries, as extra fees will apply. It's perfect if you are looking for a quaint place located in a calm walkable neighborhood!

  • We loved our stay at Heather's place. The location is perfect. Heather gave lots of recommendations for things to do and places to eat - we tried quite a few and they did not disappoint! The house has so much character and the neighborhood is quiet with a few coffee shops and restaurants within walking distance. Getting into downtown was very easy. We look forward to staying here again during our next Richmond visit!

  • BEAUTIFUL home with the most wonderful hosts. I stay at many Airbnb’s because I travel for work, and Heather is the most attentive host I’ve met. Before I got there, she sent me a message saying that there was going to be some construction and if I had any issues, I should let her know and she will call the construction place. There was a $5 coffee shop gift card waiting for me. She says she is hoping to start her own interior design company for Airbnb’s and personal homes. I fully expect to buy from her shop in the future because her taste is A++!!

  • This row home was way so thoughtfully decorated, and larger than I was expecting! It is in the perfect location, within walking distance to lots of great spots. There is also a Pulse bus stop within half a mile. When we accidentally locked ourselves out, Heather and Eric were over within 10 minutes to get us situated. We had a wonderful time here and would 100% recommend to other guests.

  • Kristi’s hideaway was phenomenal. My friends and I were so excited to find that the location was perfect to experience downtown Richmond. The place was classic and quirky.. just like Richmond! Kristi left us a bottle of wine to start off our weekend, and sparkling water to recover from the hot weather. We so enjoyed our stay and highly recommend this beautiful venue as your next city getaway!

    Susie2019-08-04T00:00:00Z
  • This place is fabulous and we enjoyed our stay tremendously. My Sister and I came to Richmond to run the marathon. This was a great location to stay at. Several places to eat and drink within walking distance. The beds are comfortable and place is sparkling clean. The owner Kristy is super friendly and helpful, the best host we have had at an Airbnb. We highly recommend staying here.

    Deb2018-11-11T00:00:00Z
  • This place is amazing and Kristy is a wonderful host! The space is beautiful and comfortable and it is clear that a lot of thought and love went into designing it. We especially appreciated the chilled bottle of wine when we arrived and the beautiful shower - not to mention to awesome soap/shampoo/conditioner that supports women’s health! The dinner recommendations were spot on and allowed us to explore this neighborhood. We know exactly where we will stay if we ever are in Richmond again. Thank you!

  • A pristine, private getaway that I would highly recommend to any couple who seek a cool, kid-friendly place to stay in Richmond. The property owners were thoughtful, responsive and friendly.

  • Amazing Air bnb experience. Place was awesome, Kristy was incredibly helpful and one of the best hosts I've ever had. Highly recommend staying here.

Eco-friendly apartment with off-street parking in rehabbed historic warehouse in Church Hill. Regular amenities in addition to laundry, geothermal heating/cooling, solar hot water
A clever factory conversion of the early 1900s, 7 N 25th St has produced this unique designer living space. A very cool urban home featuring rustic, industrial, and contemporary charm with its exposed beams, brick walls, hardwood floors and granite counter tops. The retained industrial themes and open floor plans create a great sense of space and privacy plus it enjoys a central lifestyle location.
Church Hill is a Historic Neighborhood and district located in the City of Richmond on the on the east end of Broad Street and is within walking distance of bustling downtown Richmond Virginia. This wonderful neighborhood is home to such historic places as St. Johns Church where Patrick Henry gave his famous "Give Me Liberty or Give Me Death" speech, The Poe Museum and Richmond National Battlefield and is where Richmond Began in 1733. Church Hill is full of history, cobble stone streets and beautiful city views. This is the place to be if you want to be part of Richmond's History. There is always something happening nearby. Local festivals include Church Hill Irish Festival, Richmond Folk Music Festival, Jazz Festival, Greek Festival, Hogtober BBQ Festival, Nation Beer Expo. You name it, Richmond has it!
  • Super clean, super cool, excellent location and all the little things you need. Brenda is a very thoughtful host. Very comfortable spot. The apartment is right across the street from a grocery store and a drugstore, and plenty of restaurants and nightlife within 5-10 minutes walk. Steps away from a rapid transit station if you need to go farther. We appreciated the free parking space and dog friendly atmosphere. Folks not familiar with Richmond, be aware that Church Hill is very hilly - so get ready to walk up some hills. That aside, its a beautiful historic neighborhood with lots to check out and do. Book this place, you won't regret it.

    Cristina2018-10-07T00:00:00Z
  • Everything was super well-organized with clear instructions about arrival/departure. The airbnb itself was newly renovated and perfect as a home base to explore Richmond from. Adam made sure the kitchen was stocked with supplies when I mentioned we planned to cook, and we were happy to find a large grocery store across the street.

    Phil2015-08-23T00:00:00Z
  • We loved our stay at Brenda's apartment. The location was perfect and the unit was very clean. The space provided us with all the amenities we needed for our week of vacation and the place was comforting after a day of walking around Richmond. The ability to park at the private lot adjacent to the apartment was a big plus.

  • Brenda, along with her husband, made my 6 month stay in Richmond a breeze. They respond quickly to any issues and are always trying to improve the customer experience. For longer stays, please send her a quick message!

    Mitesh2016-10-06T00:00:00Z
  • Bren went above and beyond to help me find my keys which I left behind at the apartment, and got them sent to me quickly and for free! Amazing hospitality. The place itself was spotless, much roomier than the photos make it look, and had everything you would want. I checked in the first night at one am and because it’s just a coded entry to the building and my apartment, it was stressfree. Thanks so much, I’ll be back for sure.

  • This was a fantastic place to stay. Next time I am going to the area, I would not think twice about booking here. The host, Jes, was more than responsive to questions, she had several very good recommendations for local establishments which were great. The area is close enough to downtown that driving or catching an Uber is not crazy and there were several points nearby that you could walk to without issue

    Jaeger2018-08-04T00:00:00Z
  • Jes was a great host; recommended several places to eat/go and was gracious with her home. It was a great stay!

  • Jes’ place in Church Hill is wonderful. Beautifully designed space, great location, and extremely comfortable and inviting. The neighborhood can’t be beat; you can walk to some beautiful parks, top-notch restaurants, and historical spots with ease. Check-in and check-out were a breeze, and we didn’t have any issues at all during our stay. Jes is a great host that communicates quickly and thoughtfully. Very accommodating. And her place is full of idiosyncratic touches that betray the love for her home, neighborhood, and city. Highly recommended!

  • Great apartment in an area with lots of restaurants and bars with an excellent bakery, grocery store and drugstore within blocks. I stayed for 6 weeks, walked to downtown for work, had terrific dining options in the evening and appreciated my choices. It's quiet on Monday-Wednesday evenings, then a bit livelier on Thursday-Saturday evenings. The speakeasy across the street is a must...look up their password on the FB page.

    Leah2017-02-25T00:00:00Z
  • This space is too perfect for words. Easy check in and out, and it's near some cute Richmond finds. Only a short ride away from Richmond's other attractions as well. Such a cute space and we will definitely be back!

  • We enjoyed our stay in Anahita's place. The accommodations were clean, the bed and linens were cozy. All necessary items were provided to enjoy a meal at our temporary home. It was easily accessible to area attractions and had several nearby restaurants. We especially enjoyed the "1920's book store" across the street. Anahita was able to let us in the apartment early and answered all questions promptly. We will definitely look into booking here again.

    Angel2017-08-27T00:00:00Z
  • Nice accommodations in the heart of Shockoe. Walkable to many restaurants and attractions.

    Tim2019-01-19T00:00:00Z
  • Anahit's place is ideal for anyone looking for a spacious apartment in the heart of Richmond. You have everything you would need for a short- or long-term stay, including a kitchen, washer and dryer, large common room area, a sizable upstairs bedroom, and a parking space in the back. The location is also wonderful as it's within easy walking distance of the bars and restaurants in Shockhoe Bottom, two blocks from the running paths along the James River, and less than a 10-minute walk from Church Hill and the heart of downtown. Anahita is a responsive host, and I would highly recommend her place to anyone looking for a place to stay in Richmond.

A quaint, walkable neighborhood, that is a foodie's delight! Easy access to the interstate, public transportation, downtown, and local attractions. Incredible food, history and stunning views of the City!

It has two flats for family and friend to gather and includes two full kitchens, two full baths, two living rooms, and dining areas. The fenced backyard features a bricked patio with tables a fire pit and the front porch is a perfect place to start your day.
Our home is located in the heart of historic Church Hill/Union Hill and is 3 doors down from Sub Rosa Bakery and The Roosevelt, both nationally reviewed and loved by locals and out-of-towners. • Great house in an historical area of Richmond - close to everything. Very good restaurants are within walking distance. Rooms are spacious and amenities are abundant! Really neat turn of the century house. Tall ceilings, plaster and brick walls; mixed with modern conveniences . Thanks Katy and Mark.

    Martha2018-12-27T00:00:00Z
  • This was a great stay. Close to downtown area. Mark and Kate have good response times and the neighbors were delightful. The house itself was a cute mixture between modern and contemporary. Very homie. Definitely a good stay for anyone looking to experience Richmond downtown area and restaurants.

    Lorenzo2019-07-28T00:00:00Z
  • My family and I had such a wonderful time staying at Mark’s place! It’s a beautiful old house located in Church Hill that tastefully blends old and new. The house itself, along with it’s ideal location (very walkable to restaurants, parks) was bursting with charm. Moreover - Mark, himself, could not have been more helpful and kind. Lovely homeowners, lovely home, would definitely recommend staying here!

    Emma2018-09-30T00:00:00Z
  • All in all this home is great location is great for downtown Richmond, remember the home is an older one and shows its age. With there being only one room on the main floor not a great choice for older people that do not handle stairs real well. Parking is only street but was never a problem. With the Bakery on the corner it is great to sit on front porch and visit with the people going by.

    Richard2019-05-13T00:00:00Z
  • Great location and great hosts! Mark and Katy were extremely attentive, with local tips and even let us stay an extra few hours after check out! The house is quirky, with 2 floors each with its own kitchen and living room which I thought was cool. There’s an amazing bakery and market called Union Market within a 3 min walk. Please note: they mean it when they say it’s historic. Maybe I should of read the reviews more thoroughly and gaged my party on whether they like older houses, but the house definitely has an almost spooky charm. The photos make it look a little more modern than it is. Some of the locked off rooms, basement and household touches, especially the purple light that leads to the backyard doesn’t help. The space is great, maybe could use some more modern touches.

  • I'm not sure which attribute they consider to be "luxurious" but I would argue that tacky hand me down furniture, cheap appliances and innerspring mattress are the opposite of luxury. The squeaking and groaning that came from our mattress was so loud anytime one of us moved it was impossible to sleep soundly. The building itself is old and the entire first floor smells like mold. The planes, helicopters, sirens, trash trucks at 3 am and train horns 24/7 are really loud in the apt. The business on the first floor is also really annoying as there were a few times we couldn't park in our spot because they were in games and eating and wouldn't move. Considering we have rented a 2 bed 2 bath condo with a garage, beachfront in Florida for the same price the money we wasted here for 3 months was aggravating to say the least. We repeatedly left town to stay at a westin just so we could sleep

    Robert2016-11-09T00:00:00Z
  • I'm a travel nurse and stayed at #2 for 3 months. I loved the location. It is a super walkable neighborhood with a farmers market about 7 blocks away. There are a ton of restaurants within about a 5 to 10 minute walk as well. The building has a safe and out of the way parking lot which is a bonus for Shockoe Bottom. You also have your own mailbox and a shared laundry room. The only draw back is that sometimes the traffic can be loud but I got used to the traffic sounds pretty quickly. I would definitely stay here again if my job brings me back to Richmond.

Built in 1895, this stunning 3-bedroom house has recently been lovingly restored to its original glory.
Boasting 2 living rooms, a dining room and a gorgeous kitchen, this house has all the space you could need! There is a great backyard for you to enjoy and two off-street parking places located just outside the back gate. Upstairs there are 3 spacious bedrooms, 2 full bathrooms, ample closet space and a washer/dryer. The deck off the second floor overlooks the Richmond skyline and provides the perfect view for nightly sunsets. You’ll have access to 200+ cable channels, a Keurig and a home phone that can be used for domestic calls.
Situated on one of the most prominent streets in Church Hill, you’ll absolutely love this location. Easily walk to Sub Rosa, The Roosevelt, Union Market or Alamo Barbeque. If you’re a foodie, saddle up! There are a number of award-winning restaurants that are a stone's throw away. We highly recommend Dutch & Co, 8 ½ Church Hill, Metzger, Millie’s and Alewife... to name a few. For history lovers, St. John's Church (where Patrick Henry gave his famous 'Give me liberty or give me death' speech), the Virginia Holocaust Museum and the Edgar Allen Poe Museum are all within a few minutes of the house. A 5-minute drive to downtown Richmond, Belle Isle and Browns Island and 8-minute drive to VCU, Altria Theater and The Fan.

We even made Sunday dinner in the kitchen during our stay. With a group of four people we did run out of toilet paper and towels for a weekend stay. Will definitely come back
