Behind the main building of this quiet temple in the residential part of Kamakura lies a bamboo garden so beautiful it will leave you speechless. And in the midst of all the bamboo shoots—numbering approximately 2,000—is a little tea house, where you can sip on green tea and sample traditional sweets while birdsongs echo in the air. This might not be the easiest temple to find, but that means that it’s not overcrowded and has a wonderfully serene atmosphere in which to relax. On clear days, the sunlight filters beautifully through the trees, but it’s on rainy days that it’s at its most austere and impressive.

Hōkoku-ji (報国寺) is an old temple in the Kenchō-ji school of the Rinzai sect of Zen Buddhism located in Kamakura, Japan. Famous for its bamboo garden, it is also known as "Bamboo Temple". It is ranked #2 in Kamakura by Trip advisor. A statue of Gautama Buddha, called Shaka Nyorai in Japanese, in a sacred hall is the temple's principal image. The original of a statue of Sho Kan'non is on display at the Kamakura Museum of National Treasures. The temple is sometimes called Takuma-dera after the artist of a statue of Kashyap which was destroyed by a fire in 1891 in an adjacent hall.
