Di origini antichissime risalenti addirittura all'epoca di Augusto. Inaugurato nel 1732, è famoso per aver ospitato, il 20 febbraio 1816, la prima rappresentazione de Il barbiere di Siviglia di Gioachino Rossini e, nel 1822 la prima assoluta di Zoraida di Granata di Gaetano Donizetti.
