As a museum of “stuff the empire stole from the world,” this is hard to beat. It appears throughout A.S. Byatt’s novel The Children’s Book, which is set in Edwardian London and which describes the ceramics in Rooms 140-146 in luscious, sumptuous detail. The museum always has that former empire vibe for me. The scones with cream and jam are pretty great in the downstairs cafe, which also feels very E.M. Forster. If you know a member, or decide to become one, you also get access to an amazing secret cafe hidden at the back of the glass collection.

Free entry. It's worth the journey to see the full size plaster cast of Michelangelo's David alone. Staggering to think that this place was originally set up by Prince Albert in 1852 to be an Art and design college. They acquired the objects so that British students could learn arts and crafts by copying from objects from around the world. It is now the world's largest museum of applied arts, decorative arts, and design, housing a permanent collection of over 2.27 million objects. It's less than an hour by public transport. Get the train or tube to Victoria from Balham then get the District and Circle line to South Kensington
