fairy tale castle just outside of Cardiff. More an indulgent folly than a proper castle but pretty none the less.
The fairy tale Castell Coch, (‘Red Castle’) is set in the ancient beech woods of Fforest Fawr. Yet these great towers with their unmistakable conical roofs only hint at the splendour within. The Marquess of Bute, instructed the flamboyant architect to design and oversee the building of Castell Coch. Its highly decorated interiors and rich furnishings make it a dazzling masterpiece of the Victorian era. But it’s not just a folly. Underneath its mock-medieval walls, you can still trace the impressive remains of a 13th-century castle, once used as a hunting lodge by the ruthless Marcher lord Gilbert de Clare. From here you can also take a walk through the beautiful Forest Fawr woods. There are three trails including a Sculpture Trail with wood carvings along the route and an old mining caves.
