The ruins we see today are the remains of a stone fortress (built after William of Normandy's coronation) which was practically impregnable from three sides
If you are in Hastings it is a must see. Castle ruins on top of the West Hill - the view across the channel and towards Beachy Head is amazing and inspiring. Don't go in as there is not much to see, but wander around green space.
