You can enter the back entrance to DAR State Forest by foot. Walk right out of the driveway up Ludwig Road, and take the dirt road straight ahead just as Ludwig turns right and becomes West Road. Walk up the dirt road and you will eventually reach Upper Highland Lake, where there are more trails, one leading to a small swimming beach. To launch boats or to drive in, you'll need to purchase a DCR Parking Permit on their website.

Great place to cool off. There's a nice lake, hiking trails, Biking trails, XC & Snow shoe trails. One of my favorite places. 20 minute drive from downtown Northampton.
