The local sugar cane "engenho" in Calheta, where rum and molasses are produced. Between late March and early May (depends on the climate that year) it is possible to see the engines in action. In Engenho da Calheta you can try and purchase different rums (new and aged), as well as other products such as "bolo de mel", a typical Christmas cake made with sugarcane molasses and many different spices. Open everyday 9am - 6pm during the week and 10am - 6pm on weekends (subject to change).
