In the summer, the Axalp Woodcarving Trail (Schnitzlerweg Axalp) is a wonderful little hike. As this area is known for woodcarving, after a bad storm in 1999, the carvers went out into this area and carved over 100 of the tree stumps left broken by the storm. The 'pearl' at the end of the hike is the deep-green mountain lake, called Hinterburgseeli. One can also hike further above the lake, to the restaurant Hilten for lunch. Great traditional Swiss food. As always in mountainous regions, check first whether the weather and hiking conditions are good, and whether your own physical condition is sufficient for the hike - the high altitudes can make hiking more difficult... ; ) The hike is not suitable for baby strollers as parts are steep and the trail is bumpy.

Woodcarving Trail– From Brienz you take the postbus up to the terminus on Axalp and the start of the Woodcarving Trail. A fairly easy hike, also suitable for children, with the opportunity to swim and barbecue at Hinterburgseeli (lake). The Woodcarving Trail first leads along an undulating path across Alpine pastures and through sparse woodland. A steep zigzag path then runs down to charming Hinterburgseeli. Those preferring not to return on the same trail can follow the signpost to Restaurant Hilten at Hinterburseeli. The route leads up a steep path across Alpine meadows with grazing cows (Axalp ski area pistes) and reaches the rustic Hilten mountain restaurant in around 45 minutes

A skiing area during winter and a beautiful hiking start for you in the summer season! Brienz is famous for wood carvings and cuckoo clocks, but you will get Bus 155 to Axalp for a wonderful view.
