All the National Galleries are excellent but this one is my favourite. Crammed full of the great and the good from Scotland’s past and present, it’s a great place to hang out in bad weather. Entry is free and the history lessons are thrown in. It also has a great café.

Aside from the wonderful portraits and special exhibitions, this gallery is housed in THE most beautiful Gothic Revival building. If you do nothing else, visit the amazing double-height atrium. The cafe is also lovely for tea and cake, or a tasty breakfast or lunch.
