Drinks & Nightlife

THC Rooftop bar is the original rooftop bar in Chiang Mai offering views of Chiang Mai's old city and Doi Suthep Mountain. While the THC rooftop bar is not the only rooftop bar in the city, it remains popular with backpackers and younger tourists. It’s certainly loud and boisterous all night long, with a mostly backpacker clientele who are very friendly and in the mood to dance. Opening Hours: 18:00 – 00:00 Address: 19/4-5 Kotchasarn Road, opposite Thapae Gate.

Sightseeing

Doi Suthep is a constant part of life in Chiang Mai. A Thai saying goes, "If you haven't tasted Khao Soi or seen the view from Doi Suthep, you haven't been to Chiang Mai." This regal mountain overlooks the city from the northwest, providing commanding views from its summit. Aside from its dominating presence on the horizon, Doi Suthep is the home of some of the most deeply loved symbols in the Kingdom. Opening Hours: 06:00 - 18:00 Location: Th Huay Kaew, Doi Suthep

Parks & Nature

Right by Chiang Mai University and next to the sprawling zoo in the foothills of Doi Suthep Mountain sits this delightful wooded area that’s totally free to the public. It’s kind of like a nice park where the tropical trees are the main attraction. They’re well-spaced out throughout the lush tropical garden, providing real interest for nature buffs - or just a shady retreat for a picnic away from the hot daytime sun. There’s plenty of flowers too – some of which are rarely found in other cities in Thailand (the elevated position and shade from the mountain allows them to flourish in this particular spot). Opening Hours: 9:00 - 17:00 ocation: Huay Kaew Road Tel: +66 (0)5 338 922

This is a great spot located inside the grounds of Chiang Mai University to cool off and maybe take a nap in the shade of a hot afternoon. Chiang Mai city centre is a little bit short in the way of public parks and open green spaces (although you don’t have to travel far outside to become completely lost in greenery). Ang Kaew Reservoir attracts plenty of the university’s students as well as tourists, and was originally constructed as a water supply for the university in the 1960s. Do note there is a 50 baht charge to enter the grounds. Location: Ang Kaew Reservoir Chiang Mai University 239, Huay Kaew Road, Muang District, Chiang Mai

Arts & Culture

The Arts and Cultural Centre was created as part of the city hall’s initiative to create a source of learning about the heritage and culture of Chiang Mai. They wanted the past to be accessible and interactive for both visitors and residents of Chiang Mai, and the Arts and Cultural Centre has been successful so far in doing that. Shopping

The main venue for shopping in Chiang Mai, indeed all of Thailand, the night bazaar is a can't-miss part of the Chiang Mai experience. Set up time is around sunset (usually about 18:00) and shopping goes on unabated until about 22:30 with a few vendors remaining open even later.
