The Hill of Uisneach is the Neolithic spiritual centre of Ireland at which the High Kings of Ireland, among others, used to gather. If you're sensitive to energy, the famous Cat Stone is quite an experience. Bookings required online if you wish to visit. #HippyHeaven

Lough Ree lay at the heart of a thriving medieval world. Explore the medieval ruins at Rindoon on the west bank, or its companion castle on the east, Port. Visit one of the extra scenic viewpoints (Barley Harbour in the north, Carnakill Point Lake View in the south). Dine on the west bank at the Hodson Bay Hotel or on the east at the Glasson Lakehouse. Better still, rent a boat, raft or kayak or take a boat tour to explore the banks and islands of Lough Ree the 13th -century way. (See house manual for contact info.)

Rindoon is built on a fortified peninsula, St John's Point (near the village of Lecarrow) on the western shore of Lough Ree. The castle was built in the 13th century to protect an Anglo-Norman town that once had a population of c.1000 inhabitants. The abandoned town is one of Ireland's most important medieval heritage sites, with access via a great loop-walk, or by boat on the Shannon navigation system. Thx to Rita Ceresini for info and photo (Pinterest). See house manual for more info.
