Food Scene

There are many Taverna Doce Coffe places in Maputo but I prefer the one at Jardim dos Namorados, Frederik Engels Av. This is my favourite because of the wonderful sea view. This is the right place to have your breakfast. It is not cheap but the quality of the products are very good. Try the "Pasteis de Nata".

Take the ferryboat, cross the bay to Catembe, walk in the beach to the left side and find Diogo Restaurant. A very good restaurant with tradition to serve the best sea food and fish. It takes 20 minutes to cross the bay, then walk another 25 minutes on the beach and have a wonderful lunch. Enjoy your day!

This is a gallery cafe with an enviable location, from where you can see the magnificent sunset of Maputo and the night lights illuminating the city and the other side of the bay (Catembe). Very beautiful. I recommend a caipirinha and especially the feta cheese samoosas covered with honey and sesame seeds ... not to be missed!

At FEIMA - Feira de Artesanato, Flores e Gastronomica you can find a myriad of handmade local crafts, each a perfect souvenir to take home from your travels. The prices here are quite consistent. Some of the vendors have POS and accept payment with cards. Two restaurants are located within the market grounds: One is an Italo Mozambican Restaurant. They serve nice Italian and Mozambican food. The other restaurant is my favourite restaurant for Mozambican food at very, very good price. Here you can try traditional dishes like matapa (vegetarian or with seafood), nhemba beans, okra stew, different curries, seafood, fish and our famous Zambezian grilled chicken. All served with rice, shima.

Take the Mafalala Tour. Mafalala is a very iconic area in Maputo. Many important names, like Eusebio (football player), Malangatana (painter), José Craveirinha (poet and writer), Samora Machel (first president in Mozambique) and so many more, were born or in anyway lived in this area.

A day or two in Inhaca Island can be a wonderful option. You can take the ferry (3 hours) or a touristic boat (1 hour) and go to the Island. The ferry takes you to Inhaca and you make your own plan to go around in the island. The tour boats take you to Ponta de Santa Maria, a beautiful spot in the island, for snorkelling and swimming in those beautiful green/bluish warm waters, returning to Inhaca for lunch. On the return to Maputo they stop in Portuguese Island, a natural reserve.

This is better known as "The Elephants Reserve". It is located in the other side of the bay (going south). You need a 4x4 vehicle for this trip. You can rent a car with an experienced driver to take you there. This can be a one day trip, leaving very early in the morning. Organize your own food and drinks for the day.

Considered one of the most beautiful railway stations in the world; I recommend the visit to the Museum of the Railway Station, inside the station. Very recent, modern, well-structured and informative; It is interesting to notice the large posters that are hanging along the pathway inside the station. On your way in you can see pictures of the most beautiful railway stations in the world and returning you can see pictures showing the history of the Maputo`s Railway Station; The best time to visit this station is at the beginning of the morning and at the end of the day as you are going to see crowds of people arriving and departing on trains and have a glimpse of Maputo’s population
