An essential place to visit on your New Plymouth adventure: it has coffee, it has brunch, it has lunch, it has sea views, it has free hats (and outdoor seating). It is an excellent place to start your exploration of the Ngamotu area where you can explore the coast on a kayak, take a tour of the nearby islands and seal colony, go for a paddle-board or simply luxuriate at nearby Ngamotu beach while taking in the view of Mt Taranaki.

The Famous Wind Wand is a must-see when visiting our region. This Wind Wand was designed by internationally renowed artist, Len Lye. It's tall, it's intriguing and it's a great starting point to explore New Plymouth's shopping or our Coastal Walkway.

The Surf Highway is famous throughout New Zealand as an incredible drive full of secret surf spots and unexpected townships still proudly standing tall despite their scruffy, neglected exteriors. The beaches, however, remain some of the best in the world - Opunake Beach, in particular, is the destination for casual beach-goers and serious surfers alike. You have your choice of private spots for a picnic beside the sea and a quick dip. Okato has a wonderful cafe and a fish and chip shop I can highly recommend!

Parks & Nature

This facility is the 'Mayfair' on New Zealand's Monopoly board for a reason. When it isn't busy hosting the incredibly popular 'Festival of Lights', this park is a must-see during the day as well. Situated in the middle of New Plymouth - much like Central Park in New York - this park is easily accessible and instantly transports you to a world of greenery and birdsong. Walk the tracks from one end to another, take a picnic to enjoy on one of the lawns, take the kids to enjoy the playground or hire a row boat to explore the lake and row underneath the 'Poet's Bridge'.

This is an absolute must-do for the adventurous visitor to New Plymouth. This iconic rock can be seen from almost anywhere in New Plymouth and so it provides 360 degree views of the entire region. It is an extreme up hill climb, including scrambling up rocks and pulling yourself up on metal chains nailed into the rock but it is worth it for the view at the top!

This stunning park created and maintained by the Taranaki council is a jewel in the crown of our sightseeing. The Early Settlers, wanting a taste of home, sprinkled Rhododendrons and Azaleas throughout the untouched native forest and it remains a charming and unique tapestry of our province's history. The adventure begins on the drive out there when the road turns off the Surf Highway and the mountain's rain forest starts closing in on all sides of the winding and undulating road.
