Sightseeing

An hour's drive south of Billings, Red Lodge is a great little day trip. Enjoy the Beartooth Mountains for a day with quaint shopping, fun restaurants, local dive bars, and a very ski-bum-esque brewery. Plenty of hikes, lakes, fishing, a nature reserve where you can see buffalo, bears, mountain lions, etc., a golf course, and so much more.

Two-hours west of Billings, enjoy the fun college town of Bozeman. Go to the Museum of the Rockies to see local Dinos (a very fun trip for families) and watch them actually handle the bones. Eat, drink and play in Bozeman. If you're looking for a fun day trip, this is certainly it.

Billings is close to 4 entrances to YNP. It's probably a little more than a day trip to visit YNP but consider spending some time in the park to see wild animals and beautiful scenery.

My favorite mini-hike around Billings. Hike through a field to the top of a cliff and see a gorgeous view of the city and Yellowstone River. It's about a 2-mile hike but family friendly (watch the kids near the top!) and not too difficult. It's a beautiful location for family photos.

A beautiful walking trail within walking distance from you! If you like to walk, then definitely take a brisk walk to Norm's Island. It's got plenty of walking trails to the Yellowstone River and you'll probably see some unique wildlife like cranes, bats, probably some deer, and LOTS of dogs. There are small ponds with rentable canoes and a fun little Montessori-like outdoor playground for kids.

A fun, local zoo with great walking paths. All the animals are native to cold climates so even in the colder months you should be able to see many animals. The zoo allows you to bring your own lunch and snacks, there are no restaurants on site. There are also great parks located inside the zoo for kids.
