The best bakery in the Outer Banks! Plus it has great breakfast sandwiches, such as Sunrise Schnitzel: chicken schnitzel, bacon, fried egg & cheese served on a challah roll (tip: add onions). Stuffed bavarian pretzels with tomato, onion & cheese. Great pasties: chocolate Berliner donuts, sticky buns, pear danish with port wine cream, chocolate croissants, pear tarts, honey buns, strawberry donuts, etc. Counter service. About 2 miles south (5-minute drive). 402 South Croatan Highway, Kill Devil Hills.

Front Porch Cafe is a short walk or drive from our house (less than half a mile), order through their website or app and it’ll be ready when you arrive. A large variety of coffee and espresso drinks, plus chai, matcha, hot chocolate, lemonade, bananas, pastries, and Tony’s Chocolonely. Recommended: try the lavender syrup in tea or espresso, or the pistachio syrup in espresso. For something sweeter, try the West Third Street: mocha, caramel, toffee, espresso, steamed milk, and whipped cream. Their milks include whole, skim, 2%, half & half, almond, coconut, and oat. Counter service with a few tables inside and chairs outside. They also have locations in Nags Head and Manteo. 2200 North Croatan Highway, Kill Devil Hills.

Delicious food, and wonderful people. These folks are experts with an iron skillet, using it for tater tot poutine (with white cheddar cheese curds and cider-brined crispy pork belly), cornbread, and four cheese Mac and cheese skillet (with veggies, chicken, shrimp, or lobster), all of which are fantastic. They’re known for their fish. We don’t eat fish but we enjoy the moist and tender pot roast, the fried chicken, and the chicken pot pie. Their seasonal salads are always great, we loved the Caprese salad. There’s an extensive wine menu. Desserts and cocktails vary each day—we recommend the chocolate mousse and the creme burley. The indoor ambiance is beautiful with a lovely fireplace and decorations, and a large bar. There’s also an outdoor area with picnic tables that allows dogs. The servers and owner are kind and creative. They just started serving brunch. Reservations recommended. Less than 2 miles (about a 4-minute drive).3712 N. Croatan, Kitty Hawk.
