Neighborhoods

Brera is defined by the Milanese as 'a little Paris'. The atmosphere here is special, especially in the evening when the narrow streets are filled with stalls and the historic bars are very crowded. This is where many young Milanese spend their evenings, but also their afternoons, stopping to study in some bars along Corso Garibaldi, or stopping by Princi to chat with friends. This is the area where I spent most of my adolescence. The two most evocative streets, as well as Via Brera and Corso Garibaldi, are undoubtedly Via Solferino, where you will find the historic headquarters of the Corriere della Sera, and Via Fiori Chiari, the street that most embodies the essence of Brera: browse among the courtyards, dodge the fortune tellers, and get ready to take lots of pictures!

Wandering through the streets of Brera you will come out on a church with a beautiful neo-Gothic façade characterized by its red bricks and a huge rose window. In the square in front you will find a statue of my favorite sculptor, Igor Mitoraj, who has the gift of always being able to create works of art in perfect symbiosis with the surrounding environment.

It is the land of wonder for Italian products, the reification of the gastronomic dreams of many. Eataly is a huge supermarket where you will find every regional specialty. Let yourself be stunned by lights and colors, scents and aromas: it will be difficult not to be tempted by one of the many wonders on offer. Inside Eataly, you will also find many restaurants, including a very good pizzeria. On the second floor there is the Alice restaurant.

The art gallery is undoubtedly the richest art collection in Milan. It was Napoleon who founded it in 1809, next to the academy of fine arts, and has a unique collection of works of Italian painting ranging from 1300 to 1900. As a child, my mother made me guess which period / by which painter the works were. I have always found it to be a rather fun game (even if I was cheating very often)! In fact, the exhibition gives you a very crisp image of how Italian art evolved in the years, both in style and in content. Useful information: Price: € 10/7 audio guides: € 5 Metro stop: Lanza (M2) Montenapoleone (M3) During lunchtime you will meet face to face with the students of the Academy: the atmosphere is truly special. You might meet me! Furthermore, after visiting the halls of the art gallery you can take a tour of the ground floor where the works of the students are sometimes exhibited and where you can see their ateliers.

Food & Restaurants

If the Triennale Terrace can be considered the flagship of the Sempione area, the same must be said of Solferino. If experience is an indicator of quality, this restaurant deserves a place of honor in the ranks of Milanese restaurants. Open for more than 100 years, it is one of the reference points for the inhabitants of Brera. Here the traditional Milanese dishes are exquisite: if you are looking for a good risotto with veal ossobuco this is the place for you!

A gourmet burger shop in the Brera area, whose meat comes only from cattle raised in the pastures and the bread is hand-kneaded. Perfect if you want to have a snack during a tour of the Brera.

PERSONAL FAVOURITE Along Via Brera, near the academy of fine arts, you will find the historic Jamaica bar, where my parents' generation already went out. Open since 1911, it was once the meeting place for artists and intellectuals of the area, while today it is the meeting place par excellence of the traditional Milanese yougsters.

Cocktail Bars

The classic place to stop for a last glass, or try a Negroni for an aperitif. But you can also eat there, as the place is also a restaurant. The atmosphere is warm and soft, perfect for spending a pleasant evening, especially for those who want to have a late night out.

The list of craft beers looks like a telephone directory, and in general this appeals to connoisseurs. But the nice thing is that the managers express a passion for the subject that makes the experience even more enjoyable.

Another bar famous for its craft beers. The interior reflects a lot of the Irish pubs, from which it takes its name, and is the classic place to go to see Inter or AC Milan matches with a nice ice-cold beer. For true connoisseurs, if you talk to the owner he could also sell you some extremely rare beers, not found in other bars in Milan.

Yet another Irish-style brewery, which is distinguished, however, by the presence of a table football downstairs. Perfect for a chaotic evening in a pub full of young and friendly faces!
