City/town information

INTERLAKEN is the main city in the JUNGFRAU REGION. Our Airbnb apartment is in Wilderswil which is 2 km from Interlaken in the centre of the Jungfrau Region with the famous Alps the Eiger, Mönch and Jungfrau. Between the Mönch and the Jungfrau is the famous Jungfraujoch (TOP OF EUROPE) where you can go by a cogwheel train through the mountains Eiger and Mönch and that will offer you great views over the snow covered Alps and the Aletschgletcher (glacier). More details about this trip in our tourist guide for Grindelwald THE GEOGRAPHICAL SITUATION. To help you understand the possibilities for the tourist activities you can develop in the Jungfrau region it is helpful to understand the geographical situation: Interlaken is situated on a flat area between the two lakes: Lake Thun (Thunersee) in the west and Lake Brienz (Brienzersee) in the east. South of Interlaken is a valley leading to the famous Alps: Eiger, Mönch and Jungfrau. Right at the entrance of this valley is Wilderswil (2 km from Interlaken) and our country house is located at the edge of this village in the middle of the fields, but still close to the railway station and supermarket. Very important information for planning your trips is to know that 6 km from Wilderswil the valley splits in two branches: One leading to Lauterbrunnen and one leading to Grindelwald. Between Lauterbrunnen and Grindelwald is a mountain called Männlichen. You can go from one valley to the other by a cogwheel train from Lauterbrunnen via Wengen and the foot of the Eiger (Kleine Scheidegg). So you could go around the Mountain Männlichen and also over the top of this mountain as there are cable cars from both Wengen and Grindelwald to the top of the Männlichen. This situation offers you many different routes to travel and many walks and great hikes. More information on Grindelwald, Lauterbrunnen and Wilderswil below in the Tourist guides for this places. BY CAR OR BY TRAIN It is good to know that you can reach every tourist attraction and all other places of interest by public transport that is well organised, going frequently and comfortable. However a bit overcrowded in the high seasons in summer and winter. The international trains go to Interlaken West and Interlaken East and from there you transfer to the local train to Grindelwald and Lauterbrunnen. The second stop of the local train from Interlaken East after just 5 minutes is Wilderswil and after Wilderswil the train will split: one end going to Lauterbrunnen (15 minutes) and the other end going to Grindelwald (20 minutes). Our Country house is only 800m (10 minutes’ walk) from Wilderswil railway station over a flat road. At the station is also a bus that brings you to Interlaken Centre in 5 minutes (Bus line 105) and Interlaken railwaystation west (7 minutes). Important to know is that you cannot go by car further than Grindelwald or Lauterbrunnen and you have to park there anyway. From there you can travel further by cogwheel train or cable car. Be aware that in high tourist seasons in summer and winter parking in Grindelwald and Lauterbrunnen could be a problem. That is even more true for the high winter season as thousands of one day tourists come to Grindelwald and Wengen to enjoy skiing. Also traffic could be bad at the end of the day as many travel back home over the narrow mountain roads. Another reason to travel by train is that you can travel round trips without coming back to collect your car. (Going up in Grindelwald and down via Lauterbrunnen) Still as you travel around Switzerland and spend only a few days in the Jungfrau Region and if you travel with your family with little children and a lot of luggage, a car could be more convenient. Anyway you can park free of cost at our private parking place next to our country house. In the winter you should not go by car to Grindelwald or Lauterbrunnen as traffic can be very bad. Most people from Switzerland going skiing for one day also leave their car in Wilderswil and continue by train. INTERLAKEN is a city with international fame and connected with international trains. However it is quite small and has only 6.000 citizens. Including the villages around, like Matten, Bönigen and Wilderswil it will add up to 15.000. Of course the number of people around will multiply in the high tourist seasons in summer and winter. In the centre of the city is a large green (Hohematte) surrounded by flowers and promenades, where people stroll around and the paragliders are landing. In the street along the green next to the Casino and famous Victoria Jungfrau 5 Star hotel - where the very rich are staying – are the luxury shops and jewellers offering the famous Switch watches for astronomical prices. Walking here on a summer night is a great pleasure as is a cup of coffee on one of the terraces. Besides the very luxury shops Interlaken has all you wish for shopping. Also there are many pubs restaurants, bars, and other nightlife. In winter on the central green is a skating rink (Recent years it was canceled due to high energy prices) and there are stalls where you can buy snacks and Christmas presents which brings a fairground atmosphere. RIVER AARE: The crystal clear water of the river Aare flows (at high speed) through the city and a walk on the promenades along the river is highly recommended. TOP OF INTERLAKEN is the Harder Kulm: a restaurant and platform, high on one of the mountains north of the city offering great views over the city, the lakes and the surrounding mountains. A cable car situated 5 minutes from railway station Interlaken East will bring you up to this 1300m high mountain ridge. TIP: When staying with us you get a free tourist card that allows you to travel by tain to to Interlaken East for free and also offers a discount at the cable car to the Harder Kulm. A diner at sunset on the Harder Kulm is an experience you will not forget. St. BEATUS CAVE and Waterfalls: West of Interlaken at the northern road along Lake Thun is a cave and waterfalls that has a legend of a Saint (St. Beatus) beating a dragon. A good option for a rainy day. BOAT CRUISES: Both on Lake Thun (Thunersee) and Lake Brienz (Brienzersee) you can make short and longer cruises. Tip: You can take the boat on Lake Brienz to the Giessbach fall and visit this water fall and the 19th century Grand Hotel and surrounding park with beautiful views over Lake Brienz. Departures from Interlaken East railway station. Tip: You can go off the boat at the village Iseltwald and walk the footpath along the lake to Giesenbach 6 km or vice versa and take from there the boat back or to proceed to Brienz. Tip: For a return trip over Lake Thun you have to take the earliest boat to have time enough to get the return boat. Departures from the Interlaken West railway station. OUTDOOR ACTIVITIES PARAGLIDING: Besides walking and hiking and boat cruises as mentioned above there are many other outdoor activities. Most spectacular is paragliding. Everywhere in Interlaken you will find pop up ticket sales for paragliding. You will be taken by a minivan up to the northern mountain slopes from where you ‘jump’ and fly high above Interlaken to land on the green in the middle of the city centre. (among other places where you can land). FURTHER OUTDOOR ACTIVITIES: White water rafting, Canyoning, Kayaking, Yet boating, Mountain Biking, Quad-touring and much more!

The Jungfrau Region has many tourist attractions. The most famous is the Jungfraujoch TOP OF EUROPE that can be reached via Grindelwald. It is a big building high in the mountains between the Jungfrau and the Mönch. It is the highest tourist facility in Europe and called TOP OF EUROPE. Most of the buildings and tunnels are inside the mountain including a large railway station, many restaurants, a museum and exhibitions. Outside are platforms from where you can view the snowy tops of the Alps and overviewing the Aletsch glacier. It is also possible to walk on the glacier. The tunnel for the cogwheel train to get there was drilled through the mountains around 1900 at the costs of many lives of the workers. The history of this impressive project is displayed in one of the tunnels and there is a memorial for the workers who died drilling the tunnel. HOW TO GET THERE: Be aware that a trip to the Jungfraujoch will take some hours: First you go to Grindelwald. From there you can choose between the fast new cable car – the Eiger Expres – to the foot of the Eiger or the slow cogwheel train to the Kleine Scheidegg and from there another train to the foot of the Eiger. The train through the mountain takes 45 minutes. So with all the transfers you are underway for some hours. And it could be very busy, so waiting in ques could happen. Be aware the Jungfraujoch is very popular and could be seen as mass tourism. The fast cable car leaves from the Grindelwald Terminal and the cogwheel train from Grindelwald main station. You can also get on the cogwheel train from Grindelwald Grund which is closer to the parking areas . TIPS: Do not buy tickets too far in advance, as you better do not go during bad weather or a very clouded sky, because you will see nothing and waste your money as the tickets are quite expensive. You can buy combination tickets or day-tickets at Wilderswil station. As soon as you know you will go, make a reservation via the internet as the cogwheel train through the mountain can be very crowded leading to long ques and waiting time. A reservation gives you some priority. GRINDELWALD MÄNNLICHEN: From Grindelwald Terminal there is an other cable car to the top of the mountain named Männlichen. From there you have beautiful views over Grindelwald area and the impressive Alps; specially the famous steep Eiger Northface. From the top of the Männlichen you can walk to Kleine Scheidegg via the Panorama trail 1,5 Hour 4,7 km easy walking and offering still more breath-taking views. A much longer, but beautiful walk is from Kleine Scheidegg to Wengen (7 km 2.5 hrs) You can also take the cogwheel train or shortcut your hike at two intermedium stations if you find out it is too far for you! Going up the the top of the Männlichen from Grindelwald, you could also go down by cable car on the other side of the mountain to Wengen and visit Lauterbrunnen. GRINDELWALD FIRST: From the centre of Grindelwald you can take a cable car to the top of the mountain east of Grindelwald named First. At the top is a spectacular platform were you can cliff-walk around a cliff looking 1000 meters down in the valley. From First you can walk to the Bachalpsee, a lake high in the mountains (Easy walk). Halfway the cable car ride, going up to First of down from First, you can get out at Bort where you have a restaurant and a playground for children. As this is less high, the temperature is most of the time a little higher than at the top and it is less windy.

In Wengen there is also a cable car to the top of the Männlichen. SCHILDHORN: From Lauterbrunnen and Mürren there is a cable car going up to the mountain named Schildhorn. A restaurant and platform at 2970m that has some fame as it was the décor of an older James Bond movie.
