Originally built as the Beechworth Athenaeum in 1857, The Robert O’Hara Burke Memorial Museum was named in honour of Robert O’Hara Burke, the famous explorer and former Beechworth Superintendent of Police, after his death at Coopers Creek in 1861 during the Burke and Wills expedition. The collection includes Burke’s own bible, inscribed revolver and saddlebags used in the ill-fated expedition. The Museum boasts a fascinating and historically significant collection of more than 30,000 individual items, many dating back more than 150 years. The collection includes a large collection of 19th Century native animal and birdlife taxidermy, significant Gold Rush era artefacts, and the “Street of Shops”, a unique recreation of Gold Era Beechworth. A new section of the museum, the Ned Kelly Vault, opened in the former Sub Treasury building of the Beechworth Historic and Cultural Precinct in 2014. This collection is the most comprehensive of its type in regional Australia and includes the original death mask of Ned Kelly and numerous original items relating to the bushranger and his Gang.

Built in 1858, the Telegraph Station is one of a suite of beautifully preserved Gold Era buildings which make up the Beechworth Historic & Cultural Precinct. It once linked the town to the outside world through the medium of Morse Code. This revolutionary new communications tool was the Internet of its day, enabling fast delivery of messages, including news of the famous Kelly Gang siege at Glenrowan which was transmitted from this building. The Telegraph Station is also home to the pioneering work of the early surveyors who planned the well laid out streetscape of Beechworth and other surrounding towns. Exhibits of the tools of the profession are available for viewing and visitors can experience the operations first-hand. Today, the building remains one of the busiest telegraph offices in the world, supported by the international Morse Code Fraternity. With the help of our Morse Code experts, visitors to the building can still send telegraphic messages anywhere in Australia or overseas using this early system of electronic communication. Visitors can also view the excellent audio-visual experience that recreates Beechworth’s development as well as the Oral History Room with recordings of local residents, giving first-hand accounts of life in the town. A new exhibition on the Beechworth Railways and Transportation will also enthral train buffs, young and old.

Parks & Playgrounds

ocated less than 1 km from the town centre, Queen Victoria Park is large park shaded by giant heriatge listed tress. The site of the park was reserved in 1858 with a granite outcrop as the central feature. An elaborate design by Hungarian artist J A Rochlitz won a design competition the following year, with prison labour helping clear the site and the first exotic trees were planted in 1861. Over the years the park has played host to many activities including croquet, camping, concerts and picture shows and is now a popular picnic spot for locals and visitors alike. Pack a picnic rug or claim one of the tables and chairs, undercover or out in the open, with free BBQ facilities provided. Children will be kept entertained with a popular playground area. Wander down the commemorative avenue, or inspect the two large cannons that were mounted in 1900 atop of the large granite outcrop. Facilities: Free electric BBQs, covered eating area, outside picnic tables, play ground, public toilets and car park

The Beechworth Town Hall Gardens were given life by noted 19th century botanist, Baron Ferdinand von Muller, who sent trees and seeds from the Royal Botanical Gardens in Melbourne. These gardens have been open public space since 1857. The rotunda, fountain and two urns are in their original positions, dating from 1876. Many trees from the original plantings are on the National Trust Significant Tree Register. A story board has been erected on site with information about these historical gardens.
