You will find the book "Widow of the South" on the book shelf in the front bedroom. This is the true story of Carrie McGavock who lived right down the road during the Civil War at Carnton. Their home became the center of one of the bloodiest battles in the Civil War - the Battle of Franklin. Carnton was turned into a battle hospital. And then the canon fire cleared over a thousand men of the confederacy were dead. It became the McGavock's life work to care for the fallen men and they created, on their land, one of the largest confederate cemeteries in the country. Tours of Carnton should not be missed. It's a moving story. Walk through history and be touched by this remarkable family.

The small town of Columbia is about 40 minutes south of Franklin. This little historic town square is charm at it's small town best. Sit and enjoy a beer at Asgard Brewery. Walk along the Duck River at Riverwalk Park. Have a lovely patio dinner at Southern Tre'. The town clock tower rings every hour. There is great antique shopping at Bleu 32 - a converted department store with 3 stories of treasure hunting. Don't miss seeing the original elevator - now out of service but worth a photo or two. Check out the beautiful vintage photographs at West 7th Co. Right on the town square. Ask the owners of the gallery about how they discovered The Orman Collection. You can take Hwy 65 to Columbia but I recommend taking Carter's Creek. It takes about 10 more minutes - but the drive is beautiful. Everything the TN country has to offer. Rolling hills, tree lined lanes, Victorian architecture, big red barns. Goats, donkeys and horses. Roll the windows down and take the slower road.

Leipers Fork is a little hamlet about 20 minutes from Franklin. Up a winding country road. Antique stores and some restaurants. It's a charming village. I will have to say - the weekends get crazy here. It's crowded. I recommend seeing Columbia on Saturday and checking out Leiper's Fork on Wednesday or Thursday. The Country Boy restaurant is under new management - but still a great local eatery. The drive to Leipers Fork is beautiful.

This is one of the weirdest places in Nashville. A full size replica of the Greek Parthenon. Take a picnic and have a gander. Better yet, pickup a BBQ lunch at Edley's on 12 South and enjoy the park and the Parthenon.

We are about 30 minutes outside of Nashville. Things to do . . . . See a show at the Grand Ole Opry or the Ryman Auditorium All the Honky Tonks are on Broadway - this is a very crowded area. Bars, live music, dining. Park and walk the street. The County Music Hall of Fame and Museum is right around the corner from Broadway and the Ryman.

Art in the heart of Nashville. The museum is in a repurposed art deco post office. The building is as impressive as the art housed inside. Especially for art deco fans. Check their website for changing exhibits.

This is what the guidebook says: Belle Meade Historic Site and Winery, located in Belle Meade, Tennessee, is a historic mansion that is now operated as an attraction, museum, winery, and onsite restaurant together with outbuildings on its 30 acres of property. In the late 19th century, the plantation encompassed roughly 5,400 acres with over a hundred slaves. This is what I say: It's a really pretty place. The tour is expensive. The Belle Meade Plantation was a very important horse racing concern. But if you don't care about horse racing this probably is not the tour for you. You might want to skip this one and see The Hermitage instead.

Andrew Jackson's Mansion. I've haven't visited yet. But the reviews for this tour are 66% 5-star on Tripadvisor. The grounds are about 45 minutes away and the tickets prices seem reasonable. Let us know if you visit and how you liked it.

Take a walk to the Franklin Visitor Center and pickup a Historic Franklin Walking Map. A lot of the houses in our neighborhood have numbers on plaques in the front yards. These numbers are registered on the walking tour map and you can read about the buildings as you walk to and from Gideon's House.

The Carter House is another historic Civil War site. It's right around the corner and tours are conducted by the same company that curates the Carnton Plantation. Seeing both locations will give you a great vision for the events of the Civil War during the battle of Franklin.

This is a great place for a delicious breakfast - try their sweet potato pancakes. My favorite chicken salad with pecans on homemade bread for lunch is a "can't miss". A quick walk from Gideon's house. It's a one of a kind.

This is an 1800's house turned into a wonderful little coffee house. Honestly the coffee isn't the greatest - but the food is really good and you can sit in the garden and watch the world walk by. A wonderful place for an afternoon stop. The grilled cheese is pretty special. Inside you will find lots of cozy corners to work or just daydream.

Walk down to a writer's round at Puckett's. Nashville is famous for hosting "writer's rounds". Where song writers showcase their lyrical magic. Puckett's does not have a cover charge for their music nights. Have dinner, listen to some great country music and walk home along the tree lined streets. I highly recommend just ordering from their appetizer menu and sharing with friends. Their brisket nachos are a winner.

Geist is a treat. Specialty drinks, great food and a year-round patio. In the winters the patio lights up with fireplaces and they have cozy throw blankets to warm your legs. We went as a party of 5 and everyone had something different for dinner - all the dishes were out of this world.

City/town information

One of Nashville's oldest neighborhoods is the quaint and lovely Germantown which sits just north of downtown and spans a grand total of 18 city blocks. Germantown was designated as a historic community by the National Register of Historic Places in 1979 and features many attractions such as the Nashville Farmer's Market, the Tennessee State Museum, First Horizons Park and the beautiful Bicentennial Park. Germantown is known not just for its walkable brick sidewalks and classic victorian charm but also for the number of great restaurants that call the neighborhood home. The neighborhood is called Germantown because of the many European immigrants who moved here in the late 19th and early 20th century. https://nashvillego.com/neighborhoods/germantown

https://nashvillego.com/neighborhoods/berry-hill Berry Hill is an eclectic city within a city in Nashville that most people think of as a neighborhood but it’s actually an independent town with an elected mayor. Much of Berry Hill exists on winding streets and its architecture is largely composed of quirky and colorful 1940s style cottages. The beating heart of Berry Hill is its community of small, independent businesses. Here you’ll find an abundance of recording studios, pet stores, cafes, vintage boutiques and even a scuba diving business. While there’s a ton of local shops in Berry Hill, right across Thompson Lane on the city’s south side you’ll find a number of big box stores. Berry Hill is a small community, the 2010 Census found it has a total of 537 residents.
