The Rockaways

Sightseeing

The Rockaways are a thin barrier island that separates NYC from the Atlantic Ocean. A haven for surfers and brimming with posi vibes, the area is sort of like the NYC version of Venice Beach. A great day trip with lots to see and do.

You won’t believe you’re still in NYC. Fort Tilden is a former military base that has been turned into part of a National park; the desolate beach of Fort Tilden has been a local secret for a long time. It’s hard to get to without a car, so I recommend taking one of the vans or buses that drive out on the weekends: https://www.alexisvanlines.com/fort-tilden

Riis Beach is great if you don’t mind crowds on the weekends. This Art Deco bathhouse was part of the WPA program during the Great Depression, and hosts tons of amenities. Didn’t bring any beach stuff with you? No problem! Just rent everything from the LIDO app: https://www.lidoapp.com They’ll set up chairs, sun shades, even a cooler filled with drinks. And at the end of the day, they’ll pack up everything for you. Riis is next to Fort Tilden, and if you’re up for a long walk you can reach Tilden from Riis and vice versa.

Do you like birds? This park is located on the city-side of the Rockaways, and hosts tons of rare birds like osprey and visiting flocks on migration routes. It feels very remote even though you can see the NYC skyline.

Perhaps the best place in the world to find sea glass, as the name suggests this area is home to a lot of strange things washed in by the tide. Still a beautiful and unique spot in the city.

They have a pool! This is probably the newest, “fanciest” part of the Rockaways but it hosts a ton of public events and honors the chill vibes of the neighborhood.

Food scene

No trip to the Rockaways is complete without a stop at Tacoway. Formerly Rockaway Taco, this surfer hangout has delicous food served from a cart in their garden. Live shows and movies happen regularly in the evenings.

One of our favorite things to do is grab a falafel sandwich before hitting the nearby beach here. Really excellent food, something for everyone.

Right on the boardwalk, this is our regular spot to hang in the Rockaways. RIPPERS has all the good vibes: excellent food and epic dance parties on the weekends starting in the afternoons. Hang out and watch the surfers while drinking a cold beer. This stretch of the boardwalk also has a public bathroom.
