The Mornington Railway runs on the Mornington Branch line, recreating the original Victorian Railways branch line operation. As a heritage and tourist railway at the gateway to the Mornington Peninsula, return services from Moorooduc to Mornington deliver education and enjoyment for children and adults.
Trains run each Sunday of every month and some public holidays as well as Wednesdays during Victorian School Holidays. On most days, steam locomotives haul lovingly restored passenger carriages. On other days, trains are hauled by heritage diesel electric locomotives.
The main centre of operations is at Moorooduc Station located next to the Mount Eliza Regional Park. Entry is from Two Bays Road near Moorooduc Highway. The Mornington Peninsula is a popular holiday destination for international, interstate and Melbourne visitors.

In the mid-2000’s the property was a working race horse training facility housing up to 80 thoroughbred horses and featured its own 1,200 metre grassed training track. After a significant facelift, the centre of the old horse training facility is where you will find a truly unique brewery. Merricks - Red Hill Rail Trail
From Merricks, a walking track and equestrian trail passes vineyards and farmland, with distant views
of the Nobbies and Phillip Island. Many gum and pine trees en route to Red Hill ensure sightings of
parrots, thrushes, rosellas, silvereyes and many other birds, before you return along the same trail.
WALK DESCRIPTION
From the NW corner of the Station Ground Recreation Reserve, follow the trail uphill for about
2km. You will pass vineyards and have great views of Phillip Island, the Nobbies and Western
Port Bay. The trail continues through farmland and down a short, steep hill before reaching
Tomkins Rd. Here, the gradient becomes easier: the trail follows an easement which was once
a local railway.
The single-track Red Hill line, which opened in 1921, branched off the Stony Point rail line
at Bittern, but it was relatively short-lived, closing in 1953. The rails were subsequently
dismantled, and much of the line is now on private property, although the right-of-way
between Merricks and Red Hill has been preserved as this shared-use trail.
From Tomkins Rd, the trail passes through an
avenue of gum and pine trees and two small cuttings,
before reaching the Red Hill South Bushland Reserve
(toilets), close to Point Leo Rd, for lunch.
After lunch, retrace your steps along the rail
trail, enjoying the wonderful views en route to
Merricks, which is well-known for its General Store
and wineries.

Built in 1844 by Andrew and Georgiana McCrae, it is one of Victoria's oldest homesteads and a physical reminder of the life of early pioneers, using locally available materials.
Georgiana was an accomplished artist, musician and diarist. Her sketches, housed in the museum beside the original homestead, contain the rare collection of 19th century family heirlooms and artworks.
The two museums house the story of the McCrae's and the Burrell family. The Burrell's lived at the homestead from 1851 to 1925.
McCrae Homestead is currently host to a cross-cultural education program in partnership with the Bunurong Land Council Aboriginal Corporation, where primary school students can learn via hands-on activities about the culture and daily life of the local Bunurong people, who co-existed alongside the McCrae's, under the guidance of Taungurung woman and experienced Indigenous Learning Facilitator Samantha Trist.
