Santa Bárbara de Samaná (60 minutes away) is the largest town in the peninsula. There you can go shopping in the colonial colourful houses along the Avenida la Marina, eat at one of the restaurants in the pier overseeing the walking bridges connecting the keys over the water, depart to Cayo Levantado, take a whale-watching tour or an excursion to Los Haitises Natural Park across the bay. The bay is home to some of the world's best whale-watching from mid January to late March.

The boulevard is a road with verdant mountainsides that connects the main towns in Samaná. Go to Las Terrenas for shopping, leisure and other services. A relatively new toll road connects Santo Domingo to the peninsula in around a two-hour drive.
