This restaurant, bar and cafe has one of the nicest outdoor spaces in Rome. Located in the gentrified Pigneto neighborhood, Necci is best known for being the haunt of poet, writer, director Pier Paolo Pasolini. With several spaces outside, under the trees or under tents or under the awning, there is no need to feel cramped when deciding to eat here. The highlight for breakfast and brunch here, is that Necci bake all their pastries and bread daily on site. The rotating menu has such specialties as paccheri pasta with octopus, cherry tomatoes and olives and steak with fries. It's really your one-stop dining outlet in the Pigneto neighborhood.

Specialities includes unique pagnottelle: sourdough sandwiches filled with scrumptious fillings ranging from local ‘porchetta’ to bresaola della Valtellina to gorgonzola and anchovies from Cetara. Pigneto Quarantuno, named for its number guarantees a good meal at a great price. It excels at Roman dishes while adding a subtle twist to the classics: Roman artichokes are stuffed with cod and potatoes and tagliolini noodles are served with turnip greens, anchovies and breadcrumbs. Hearty and satisfying without being heavy, Pigneto Quarantuno hits all of the right nails on the head and is a great go to for any occasion.

Go beyond carbonara and amatriciana and discover the different cuisines brought to Rome by its large immigrant population. There are a number of Ethiopian restaurants in the city but Mesob, tucked away on Via Prenestina, is widely considered the best. Opt for one of the sharing platters that feature slow-cooked meats, braised vegetables, and richly spiced lentils, all served atop traditional injera – use this spongy flatbread to scoop up the flavoursome food.

With no flashy signs – or, in fact, almost any superfluous decoration – you’d be forgiven for passing La Gelateria del Pigneto without a second glance. Inside this unassuming shop, though, is one of Rome’s most interesting selections of gelato. Small in number but big on taste, the flavours change with the seasons and feature unusual ingredients such as violet, rose, jasmine and uva fragola – literally translating to ‘strawberry-grape’, this variety of grape has a sweet, summery taste.

Outside the recently opened Metro C station, you can find La Bottiglieria. Commuters would enjoy from 7 am a home-made breakfast more varied than most places in the city centre. Brunch at nooon, then way through till midnight German beers on tap, multitudinous wines (including ‘biological’ ones) plus ports from Portugal. Inside the place is mellowed by vintage-looking sofas, active-looking bookshelves, and, yeah, a jukebox; Donna Summer, the Beegees or Elvis singing ‘O sole Mio’ all wait to be given a spin.

The Coppedè neighbourhood, named after the flamboyant architect that designed the ‘quartiere ’ between 1913 and 1927, is one of Rome’s most exclusive, and smallest, districts. What makes this area so captivating though, is its delightfully tongue-in-cheek mix of architectural styles. Taking his inspiration from Medieval, ancient Greek, Art Nouveau, Neo-Classic and Baroque styles, Gino Coppede built a residential area that makes one feel like you’ve stepped into a world of fantasy and magic. The entire nieghbourhood lies between Piazza Buenos Aires and Via Tagliamento – and although it’s off the beaten track, it’s still easy to reach, either with the tram 3 or tram 19.

The Varsi Gallery is the new kid on the block. In the last two years, it has focused on artists who use their cities’ sidewalks, walls, or metro stations as the canvases for their pieces. The gallery draws attention to up-and-coming urban artists from around the world who celebrate and critique the modern metropolis. The gallery also has a bookshop “dedicated to underground culture” that features the artists displayed.

It’s not all crumbling ruins and ancient history in Rome. Locals and visitors alike have flocked to MAXXI to marvel at the building itself – designed by Zaha Hadid – and to appreciate the architecture, modern art and creativity in general. The premise is made up of two parts: MAXXI Arte and MAXXI Architettura. You will find art in the form of theatre, dance, music, fashion, graphics, film and advertising all under the roof of this catchy gallery. The MAXXI Architettura is a museum, archive, library and mediatheque that focus on promoting all forms of architecture. MAXXI’s exhibits also serve a didactic purpose, and explore history and politics through the modern art and fashion.

This invigorating museum has two locations that expose you to the wild world of modern art. With acclaimed international artists, a café, restaurant, terrace, bookshop and art installations, both galleries are fast becoming creative public meeting places. The Spazio Area has wifi, international art magazines, newspapers and holds events and workshops with poets, artists and philosophers. The MACRO in the Spazio area used to be a Peroni beer factory, while MACRO Testaccio is a former slaughterhouse with pavilions built as far back as 1888.

Gourmet cinephiles will appreciate authentic Kino. A ticket plus membership of the basement cinema can be supplemented by pre-or-post-film meal and drinks in the snug bistrot/ ex-Grauco cinema library. As an advance on popcorn, sometimes menus come themed – eg. ‘slow food’ to go with ‘slow’ films. Short seasons devoted to international directors are in the original language, rare in Italy where dubbing, often to the detriment of quality, is the norm.
