Emyet Emyet is in the Perigord Purple region of the south-west Dordogne about 20k south of Bergerac. It as a typical bastide town layout that includes an open square. In the centre of the square there is a large fountain, and roads leading off the square are lined with medieval houses that date from the 13th to 15th century. The river Dropt runs along the edge of Emyet, and you can take a ride on a gabarre built in the traditional style from the nearby town of Bergerac. Bergerac is a town on the northern bank of the Dordogne river in the western part of the Dordogne department. It is one of the largest, most important towns in the region. The area immediately north of the river is the ‘old town.’ The ‘old town’ has some lovely streets and squares to explore, and a good selection of boutiques. The ‘new town’ is north of the ‘old town’ centred along the Rue de la Resistance. Here you will find a larger range of shops, and at the western various narrow streets of shops and cafes. Bergerac has an excellent shopping complex with a wide range of shops, traditional French cafes, and an ever-present Macdonalds. For those who like life in the fast lane, there is a karting circuit opposite the shopping complex. This circuit is well worth a visit. They have karts for children, and more powerful karts for adults and teenagers. In my experience it is well run an well organised, but visitors should be advised it can be extremely busy on a Saturday.

City/town information

Duras is a small town in the north-east corner of the Lot-et-Garonne. It is best known for its castles and wines. Duras castle was renovated in the second half of the 20th century. Your visit to the castle leads you through a large number of imposing rooms and through the attractive two storied balconied interior courtyard. You also see the original bakery in the castle, the kitchen and a room with some extraordinary carpentry work (a recent but faithful reconstruction of the original), before visiting the tower and views across the valley below (there are quite a lot of steps to go up the round tower). The Maison des Vins in Duras stocks a very large range of local wine, and features an exhibition about the local wine industry. It also features an interesting garden where you can see various vines and learn about the differences between them.
