Historic pub in Belgravia with good food too and a Sunday roast offering too, legend has it that Grenadier is named after young Cedric, a soldier who was caught cheating at cards and punished by being beaten to death. No one knows exactly when this ghastly deed occurred, but it is thought to have been in September as that is when ghostly happenings are rife. Visitors hang money from the ceiling in an attempt to pay his debt, but poor Cedric seems to remain trapped on earth.

Neighbourhoods

The whole of Pimlico and Belgravia was developed by master builder Thomas Cubitt (1788-1855) under a leasing system granted by the Grosvenor family on Lady Day, 1828. In the letter of agreement Cubitt undertook to build a series of garden squares ‘...to let a little of the country-side into the town’. The apartment overlooks the Eccleston garden square and by agreement we can provide access to the garden square, which includes tennis courts and bbqs

When Tate first opened its doors to the public in 1897 it had just one site, displaying a small collection of British artworks. Today we have four major sites and the national collection of British art from 1500 to the present day and international modern and contemporary art, which includes nearly 70,000 artworks. About 15 minutes walk from Eccleston Square. Free admission although some exhibitions are chargeable.

Possibly our favourite park in London, although it can be busy in the summer. The park combines The Mall, Clarence House (home of the Prince of Wales and the Duchess of Cornwall). Pelicans have lived in St James’s Park for nearly 400 years. They were originally presented as a gift from the Russian Ambassador to King Charles II. St James’s Park is one of London’s eight Royal Parks and covers an area of nearly 57 acres.

The Garden’s location feels special and secret. It is nestled behind walls and positioned close to the River Thames. The ideal Thames location is no accident as back in 1673 the Worshipful Society of Apothecaries chose their Chelsea village site for its proximity to the river to make the most of its warm air currents. It gave them a base to moor their barge, allowing them to conduct plant finding expeditions in surrounding areas and to teach their apprentices to identify plants, those that might cure and those that might kill! The site is also blessed with a south facing aspect and good quality warm light soil, having previously been the site of a market garden. The River access allowed plants arriving from around the world to be introduced to the British Isles via the Garden, allowing the Garden to make a big impact from early on. Its international reputation was established quickly as a result of the global seed exchange scheme, known as Index Seminum, which it initiated in the 1700s and continues to this day.

Plenty of taxis and nearby underground at Victoria Station

the convenience and location of Eccleston Square is excellent, 7 minutes walk to Victoria Station for the underground and fast main line trains to the south coast of England. Plenty of taxis operate locally on Belgrave Road and some local buses from the north of Victoria station too.
