Workum

Workum, perhaps more known as the city of Jopie Huisman and the museum named after him, than as one of the Frisian Eleven Cities. Perhaps it is the influence of that famous and unique artist that a pronounced artistic and cultural climate prevails in Workum . The town has a large number of museums, studios and galleries and is the scene of performances, manifestations and other events all year round. At first glance, Workum may not seem like a real city. It never had defense works and the elongated structure of the center is also different from that of the other Frisian Eleven Cities. But it is precisely this deviance that gives Workum its unique character. The area around De Merk in particular shows that this is indeed a city. In addition to several richly decorated patrician houses, the town hall, the weigh house and the impressive church with a free-standing tower and a beautiful sacristy are located here. Especially around De Merk and along It Noard and It Súd you will also find a variety of nice shops, sunny terraces and cozy restaurants. Workum prospered thanks to trade and seafaring, which was made possible by the good connection with the Zuiderzee. The area surrounding the lock is truly a beautiful, picturesque area, including a 300-year-old shipyard. To the north and south, the city abruptly changes into the beautiful rural surroundings, a paradise for cyclists, walkers and anyone who loves peace and nature. The town was narrow and long, more than a mile from the lock to the Dwarsnoard. Workum is built on both sides of the muted Wymerts. Although the city was not located on the sea, it participated fully in the maritime trade. Workum was connected to the Zuiderzee by the Soal. After two kilometers from the IJsselmeer, this waterway has a lock with a picturesque area against the dike. Here you will find the Séburch inn and the more than three centuries old shipyard De Hoop. The fact that the Workumers converted a lot with seafaring and trade can be seen from many of the beautiful facades from the 17th and 18th centuries along the Súd and the Noard. From the lock to the southern end of the Súd there is a wide variety of buildings. There are mainly 19th-century buildings that testify that Workum prospered. On the south side of the filled-in Wymerts canal, the buildings vary in age and shape. The center is the Brand, the market. Workum's ranking is clear from the Brand's point of view. On the Merk are town hall, church and weigh house, the main buildings of secular and ecclesiastical authority. The further from the Merk, the simpler the building becomes, although there are still important buildings on the Dwarsnoard in the far northeast. The St. Gertrude's Church with its large tower stands on the southwestern side of the Merk. There has been a church in Workum since the 10th/11th century. In 1480 the construction of a new church was started. First with the choir. In 1560 the work was only 60% completed and at the beginning of the 17th century the unfinished nave was sealed with bulkheads, which was replaced in 1951 by a real west facade. The connection with the tower was never made. That unfinished tower was built from 1523 to 1545. At the beginning of the 17th century a beautiful sacristy was added to the church. Together, the church, tower and sacristy form an impressive whole, partly because the buildings around the Skil have remained so modest. Inside much splendor: a baroque pulpit, an early renaissance choir screen, a council bank and a unique collection of eight painted death bars from Workumer guilds from the 18th and early 19th centuries. They form Workum's historical picture book. The historical collection of the city is preserved and displayed in the Waag. The weigh house is a rectangular structure with a canopy that was built exactly in the middle of the 17th century. The two floors are topped by a tent roof and dormer windows have been expanded into stepped gables with pilasters on lion heads. There are also lions on the corners. On the south side of the Merk is the tall town hall, which has been the town hall of the whole of Nijefurd since 1984. It looks like a baroque patrician house, but that's an illusion: the core is still Gothic. From 1725, it was given a new look and an extra floor. In 1620 the town hall was expanded with a narrow building, a beautiful Renaissance building that is somewhat hidden behind the high staircase. Inside, the Rococo era can be experienced mainly in the council chamber. Opposite the Merk at the beginning of the Noard is the Sleeswijckhuis, a highlight of residential culture. The distinguished house has an ornamental facade from 1663. The Jopie Huisman Museum is located across the street from the Noard. Aan het Súd van de gedempte Wymerts-gracht is de bebouwing gevarieerd van leeftijd en vorm. Het centrum is de Merk, de markt. Vanuit de Merk is de rangorde van Workum helder. Aan de Merk staan stadhuis, kerk en waag, de hoofdgebouwen van wereldlijk en kerkelijk gezag. Hoe verder van de Merk, hoe eenvoudiger de bebouwing wordt, hoewel er aan het Dwarsnoard helemaal in het noordoosten nog belangrijke panden staan. De Sint-Gertrudiskerk staat met haar forse toren aan de zuidwestelijke zijde van de Merk. Sinds de 10de/11de eeuw heeft in Workum al een kerk gestaan. In 1480 werd met de bouw van een nieuwe kerk begonnen. Eerst met het koor. In 1560 was het werk pas voor 60% gereed en in het begin van de 17de eeuw is het onvoltooide schip met schotwerk afgedicht, dat in 1951 is vervangen door een echte westgevel. De aansluiting met de toren is nooit gemaakt. Die evenmin voltooide toren is van 1523 tot 1545 gebouwd. In het begin van de 17de eeuw kwam bij de kerk een prachtige sacristie. Tezamen vormen kerk, toren en sacristie een indrukwekkend geheel, mede omdat de bebouwing aan het Skil eromheen zo bescheiden is gebleven. Binnen veel pracht: een barokke preekstoel, een koorhek uit de vroege renaissance, een vroedschapsbank en een unieke verzameling van acht beschilderde doodsbaren van Workumer gilden uit de 18de en vroege 19de eeuw. Ze vormen het historisch prentenboek van Workum. In de Waag wordt de historische collectie van de stad bewaard en getoond. Het waaggebouw is een rechthoekig bouwwerk met luifel dat precies in het midden van de 17de eeuw is gebouwd. De twee verdiepingen zijn bekroond door een tentdak en er zijn dakkapellen uitgebouwd tot trapgeveltjes met pilasters op leeuwenkoppen. Op de hoeken zitten ook leeuwen. Aan de zuidzijde van de Merk staat het rijzige stadhuis, sinds 1984 het gemeentehuis van heel Nijefurd. Het lijkt op een barok patriciërshuis, maar dat is schijn: de kern is nog gotisch. Dat kreeg vanaf 1725 een nieuw uiterlijk en een extra verdieping. In 1620 is het stadhuis uitgebreid met een smal pand, een fraai renaissance pandje dat een beetje verstopt staat achter het hoge trapbordes. Binnen is de rococotijd vooral te ervaren in de raadzaal. Tegenover de Merk staat aan het begin van het Noard het Sleeswijckhuis, een hoogtepunt van woonhuiscultuur. Het voorname huis heeft een siergevel uit 1663. Het Jopie Huisman Museum staat aan de overkant van het Noard. Het Noard is aan beide zijden omzoomd door een keur aan panden met gevels uit allerlei stijlperioden: van eenvoudige lijstgevels tot fraaie trap- en halsgevels. Op Noard 12 staat een pand met een klokgevel met een grote achterbouw. Het is de kosterswoning met de daarachter liggende schuilkerk van de doopsgezinden uit 1695. Ook de rooms-katholieken van Workum moesten zich aanvankelijk schuilhouden maar konden in 1876 de Werenfriduskerk aan het einde van het Noard bouwen. In de pastorie is een museum van religieuze kunst gevestigd. De naoorlogse stadsuitbreidingen zijn aan de oostzijde gelegd, tussen het oude stadslint en de doorgaande weg.

The path ends at the dyke after which you can continue left to the old harbor and walk home, or you can turn around and follow the same way back. But before you leave the dyke please enjoy the stunning view of the city.

Anne Frank museum, Rijksmuseum and Onze Lieve heer op zolder would be our picks. Bijenkorf for shopping. The Neme museum is great and inspirational for kids.

The park is amazing with fun for children of every age. The LEGO and the variety of attractions made this a fantastic day for the kids and us. After closure of the park we drove home and arrived in Workum in the night.

The park is amazing with fun for children of every age. The LEGO and the variety of attractions made this a fantastic day for the kids and us. After closure of the park we drove home and arrived in Workum in the night.

Terschelling VVV

Enjoy the seabreeze, beachlife and island vibe at one of the Waddenislands! The ferry leaves in Harlingen, Terschelling is a 1 hour+ ferry which makes it feel like you are going far away. The town West Terschelling is nice for strawling and some shops/boutiques with island stuff. Renting bikes is recommend and there is a cool beach hut at the south end (de walvis), there is also a cool beach hut (paviljoen west aan zee).

It is an hour+ driving to Den Helder. At Texel: you can rent bikes, visit Den Burg. Nice beachhuts near De Koog. Ecomare is a organisation which helps and protects sealife, they are in the middle of the island. Oh, dont forget the beer brewery!
