About a 45 minute drive. Easy for parking and no narrow lanes to access. Recommend you head to left side of the beach towards Downderry for a peaceful spot and best for rock pooling at low tide. Spacious sandy beach, perfect for sand castles, some beautiful pink flat pebbles at the top of the shoreline. RNLI lifeguards are present at this beach and the waters have calm currents.

Explore the beauty and tranquility of Lopwell Dam, around 10 mins walk from the house. A steep walk there downhill and what feels like a steeper walk back up. The ground is uneven (rocky) under foot and is not suitable for those with limited mobility. Time is right (low tide) and you can walk across on the footpath by the Dam, where you’ll find a seasonal cafe on the other side. Kayaks can be hired (advance booking) here. Great for some wild swimming as it is low current and sheltered spot. Please exercise caution with young children as this is a tidal area.

Newquay is favoured by young travellers and backpackers but has a huge amount to offer people of all ages. It is just over an hours drive from Collytown and has a dual carriageway (a novelty in these parts) for the last half of the journey. We recommend you check out Little Fistral beach to the right hand side of Fistral Beach Hotel & Spa (they do a fantastic afternoon tea). It is much quieter and is more sheltered. Newquay harbour has some great fish restaurants or you can try out Rick Stein’s fish and chip restaurant on Fistral Beach. Parking is limited in Newquay so we recommend you head out early. We tend to park along the lane that borders the Fistral Beach Hotel and Spa, it’s a Pay & Display.
