A great day out for everyone at this National Trust for Scotland property. The entrance to Culzean Country Park is half a mile from Whitestone. There are many walks, an adventure playground at the Swan Pond and lots to do and see with catering outlets dotted around. The Ayrshire Coastal Path passes through Culzean and the wonderful coastline is amazing for walks.

Turnberry Lighthouse sits on the ruins of Robert the Bruce, King of the Scots’ family castle circa 1290. Turnberry is approximately four and a half miles from Whitestone. The lighthouse and Turnberry coast is part of the Ayrshire Coastal Path with views overlooking the Firth of Clyde towards Arran, Mull of Kintyre and Iceland. Also you can see the dormant volcanic plug of Ailsa Craig. The Lighthouse has a halfway house cafe which is open to the public and is part of the Turnberry Hotel. There is an outside dining area with amazing views.

Just one of the many beach stop offs on the Ayrshire Coastal Walk, one of the best stretches of beaches I have ever walked. It has everything you would want in a walk - truly amazing if you have good weather.

Like most small villages the High Street is the most that passing tourists see but Girvan is a gem of a place with a harbour sunset which is breathtaking and the side streets that hold so much beauty with architectural gems and history. There are also a couple of fish and chips shops as well as an Asda for picking up some supplies.

A must visit for families with kids of any age as there is loads to do both inside and out. The park is 8 miles from Whitestone and is a scenic drive around the A719 with breath taking views over the Firth of Clyde to Arran. You actually drive over the Electric Brae on this route, at about three miles from Whitestone. I have been in many times with my kids over the years and always had to drag them out when the place was closing because they didn’t want to leave!

Picturesque, historic with attention to detail makes this place one of my favourite places to wine and dine. Robert Burnes attended school on the site of Souters and had many a drunken night with his friend John Davidson the local Cobbler (Souter). Walk around the old Graveyard opposite Souters and find the graves of Robert’s old drinking cronies. (4 miles from Whitestone, located in Kirkoswald, KA198HY.)

Great place to wine and dine at The Greenside Restaurant, KA19 7DG, opposite Maybole train station (three and a quarter miles from Whitestone). This is a favourite with locals and for that reason is another hidden gem. I have been a couple of times and they have fantastic food, drinks and service with plenty of attention to detail a must try. There is also a wood fired pizza oven and a beer garden. 🤫 Keep it our hidden secret!

A great place to learn about Robert Burns’ family and life. A National Trust for Scotland attraction with an audio tour, museum, shop, restaurant and garden. I recommend the little animation to hear the poem of Tam o’ Shanter. A nice visitor attraction and you can walk the footsteps of Burns and visit the birthplace of Robert Burns in Alloway which inspired the song Rantin’ Rovin’ Robin. There is also the Auld Kirkyard which was the site of Burns’ satanical Tam o’ Shanter. Alloway was where the marital home was of Burns’ mother Agnes (who was born in Whitestone Cottage) to Robert Burns Senior.

Picturesque historical setting where you could easily spend a good few hours. Take in Burns’ Cottage and Museum, Auld Kirk, Auld Brig, Robert Burns Sr’s monument and gardens and possibly a tea & scone in the gardens of the Brig O’Doon House Hotel with the picturesque rambling River Doon.

A local charity that I used to run past on my Ultra training runs. My wife arranged an appointment to see if I could support the hospice for terminally ill children and their families. I joined the Whiteleys Warriors, a group of enthusiastic like minded people who competed in all sorts of events to raise awareness and money for this very caring charity. The events that supporters have completed have included from climbing Mount Everest to 5k runs. I took on The West Highland Way Ultra 96 miles Race.

Optical illusion that makes the a719 road feel as though your going uphill when you really are going downhill. The Coastal A719 road from Whitestone Cottage self catering accommodation to Dunure passes this at 3 miles it has breathtaking views over the Firth of Clyde to Arran & Campbelltown.
