In spring, you can see lapwings and redshanks and listen for rare Cetti's warblers. In winter, during floods or around high tide, there are thousands of waterbirds to look out for and you may also be lucky to spot something rare during the migratory season.
A great place for photographers as the estuary opens to the sea, the RSPB reserves are something special for nature lovers and those who like to just chill. Seasonal boat trips with experienced guides are also available from Topsham where there are also great places to eat and drink.

Exe Estuary

The Discovery Hut is staffed by volunteer wardens most weekends throughout the year - from here you can find out more about the Wetlands, hire pond dipping equipment and have a cup of tea or coffee. Contact the Countryside team to check opening hours for your visit.
The Axe Estuary Ringing Group also demonstrates bird ringing from the Discovery Hut - a great chance for the public to see wild birds up close. Check the Countryside events page (link at the bottom of this page) for dates, but please bear in mind that the event is subject to suitable weather conditions and may be cancelled at very short notice. Bird ringing is a valuable source of information - birds are weighed and measured before having an identifying ring put on, allowing individual birds to be identified, which is nearly impossible in the field. Thus data can be collected around the world for that bird, enabling us to learn about its movements and lifespan.
At Stafford Marsh you will find a thatched field shelter constructed during spring 2015 by the Tuesday volunteer group. This was built mainly to provide shelter from the summer sun for visiting school groups, but also as an example of what can be done using materials harvested from the site.
The signposted trails at the Wetlands make them ideal for a peaceful stroll in the fresh air; you can also have fun pond dipping, or enjoying a picnic with family and friends as well as getting to see your wonderful local wildlife up close from the five hides.
Seaton Marshes is a freshwater grazing marsh, with scrapes, ditches and ponds that attract considerable wildlife interest, from wildfowl and wading birds in the winter to dragonflies and butterflies in the summer. The hide offers views over a creek in the lower estuary, as well as the marsh. In the winter months this is a great place to look for kingfishers and small waders, such as Redshank and Common Sandpipers, while the lagoons and scrapes on the marshes support feeding Snipe, Little Grebe and Shoveler duck.
Seaton Marshes also contains the beautiful Borrow Pit pond, managed by the Countryside team on behalf of Axe Vale and District Conservation Society. Otters have been seen here, and the pond and surrounding ditches are full of dragonflies and damselflies through the summer.

Exmouth Local Nature Reserve is a massive area of tidal sand and mud at the southern end of the Exe estuary – in fact, it’s one of the biggest Local Nature Reserves in Devon. It's also a globally important area for winter birds. All of this via secret doors, long libraries and even a hidden ballroom.
The Upstairs/Downstairs Tour offers a different view – Powderham as a private home of the Courtenay family and their staff for over 600 years. Charlie and AJ invite visitors into never-before-seen family bedrooms, and offer a host of intimate and personal insights, spooky stories, and winding staircases used for generations.
Outside there are acres to explore and discoveries to be made. Visit the Walled Garden, Play Area & Pets Corner (and take part on our nature trail on the way) home to our friendly Powderham pets and adventure play area (including our Courtenay Fort!). It is a fantastic journey through millions of years in rocks of the Jurassic period together with older Triassic and younger Cretaceous rocks.
Beginning at Exmouth's futuristic five metre high "geo-needle" at Orcombe Point, the startling rich red and burnt orange Triassic rock of Exmouth's cliffs were formed in scorching desert conditions millions of years ago. Other striking features along the coastline include unique quartzite Budleigh Salterton pebbles spilling from Budleigh's cliffs onto the beach below, and the dramatic rugged red rock stacks at Ladram Bay.
The red Triassic rock cliffs around Sidmouth have been scoured and sculpted into fantastic shapes, while to the east of Sidmouth the Cretaceous Upper Greensand layer known as Salcombe Stone has been used in a number of local buildings including Exeter Cathedral.
Glistening veins of gypsum can be seen in the tiny inlet of Weston Mouth, while at Beer you can see where the soft chalk has "folded", and also visit Beer Quarry Caves where a layer of particularly fine chalk composed of densely packed shell fragments has been worked since Roman times. Hardwearing and yet easily carved, Beer stone is highly prized by masons, and has been used in Westminster Abbey and Exeter Cathedral.
As well as its unique geology, much of the East Devon Jurassic Coast lies within the East Devon AONB (Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty). It is a habitat for many rare and important plants, birds, and animals, and in the surrounding sea you may even spot dolphins and basking sharks.

The red Triassic rock cliffs around Sidmouth have been scoured and sculpted into fantastic shapes, while to the east of Sidmouth the Cretaceous Upper Greensand layer known as Salcombe Stone has been used in a number of local buildings including Exeter Cathedral.
Glistening veins of gypsum can be seen in the tiny inlet of Weston Mouth, while at Beer you can see where the soft chalk has "folded", and also visit Beer Quarry Caves where a layer of particularly fine chalk composed of densely packed shell fragments has been worked since Roman times. Hardwearing and yet easily carved, Beer stone is highly prized by masons, and has been used in Westminster Abbey and Exeter Cathedral.
As well as its unique geology, much of the East Devon Jurassic Coast lies within the East Devon AONB (Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty). It is a habitat for many rare and important plants, birds, and animals, and in the surrounding sea you may even spot dolphins and basking sharks.

The Bill Douglas Cinema Museum is an ACE Accredited public museum dedicated to our experience of the moving image. Visitors can explore popular visual culture through exhibits of toys, artefacts, images and memorabilia from the seventeenth century to the present day.
It is home to one of the largest collections of material relating to the moving image in Britain. We are both an accredited public museum and an academic research facility and we hold a collection of over 75,000 items. Over 1,000 of our items are on display, and everyone is welcome to visit our galleries seven days a week (except bank holidays and between Christmas and New Year) and our research facilities are open to all each weekday.
