Taking things at this slower pace means you can explore the flora and fauna of the river valley park as you head towards the waterside Double Locks pub for refreshments. Spot rare migratory birds on the River Exe! A haven for birdwatchers or just nature lovers, spend a day investigating the delights of the River Exe. Just a short walk or cycle from Exeter city centre, the Exe Estuary nature reserve is two areas of coastal grazing marsh on opposite sides of the river. One side of the estuary is Exminster Marshes and the other Bowling Green Marsh. Both are owned and managed by the RSPB. In spring, you can see lapwings and redshanks and listen for rare Cetti's warblers. In winter, during floods or around high tide, there are thousands of waterbirds to look out for and you may also be lucky to spot something rare during the migratory season. A great place for photographers as the estuary opens to the sea, the RSPB reserves are something special for nature lovers and those who like to just chill. Seasonal boat trips with experienced guides are also available from Topsham where there are also great places to eat and drink.

The Exe Estuary is particularly important for birds in winter, when the mild climate and suitable feeding areas attract tens of thousands of wetland birds - some of them from the UK but many travelling from Northern and Eastern Europe. Up to 20,000 wading birds and ducks, geese and swans can be present mid-winter, making the area important on an international scale. All three reserves, Exminster Marshes, Powderham Marshes and Bowling Green Marsh, are open all year. At Exminster Marshes, visitors should use the public paths and tracks; the canal towpath provides good views over the fields. At Powderham Marshes, there is a marked trail leading to a viewpoint over the reserve; due to the open nature of the marshes, we regret that no dogs are allowed on site.

The largest landslip in the UK provides the landscape for a walk through successional plant communities, that harbour several rare and ancient indicator species including Dogs Mercury and purple gromwell. This is basically a really nice walk in a unique landscape. If you're thinking of walking parts of the coastal path then this is a good section to include. In addition it ends at Lyme Regis- prime dinosaur hunting territory! The Jurassic Coast. March- June is best for woodland birds, and March- May for wild flowers. There is no real seasonality to this site however it is prone to sea mist, and the path and steps can get slippery so best to avoid over the wettest months of the year.

Situated at 35 min from Exeter and nearly 4km of level trails and boardwalk makes these wetlands a must see. Beautiful marshland and reed beds alongside the river Axe, home to an abundance of wildlife. Seaton Wetlands are made up of three Local Nature Reserves - Seaton Marshes, Black Hole Marsh and Colyford Common. There is also an area known as Stafford Marsh, where you will find the Discovery Hut and hide, pond shelter, classroom, toilet facilities and wildlife garden. The Discovery Hut is staffed by volunteer wardens most weekends throughout the year - from here you can find out more about the Wetlands, hire pond dipping equipment and have a cup of tea or coffee. Contact the Countryside team to check opening hours for your visit. The Axe Estuary Ringing Group also demonstrates bird ringing from the Discovery Hut - a great chance for the public to see wild birds up close. Check the Countryside events page (link at the bottom of this page) for dates, but please bear in mind that the event is subject to suitable weather conditions and may be cancelled at very short notice. Bird ringing is a valuable source of information - birds are weighed and measured before having an identifying ring put on, allowing individual birds to be identified, which is nearly impossible in the field. Thus data can be collected around the world for that bird, enabling us to learn about its movements and lifespan. At Stafford Marsh you will find a thatched field shelter constructed during spring 2015 by the Tuesday volunteer group. This was built mainly to provide shelter from the summer sun for visiting school groups, but also as an example of what can be done using materials harvested from the site. The signposted trails at the Wetlands make them ideal for a peaceful stroll in the fresh air; you can also have fun pond dipping, or enjoying a picnic with family and friends as well as getting to see your wonderful local wildlife up close from the five hides. Seaton Marshes is a freshwater grazing marsh, with scrapes, ditches and ponds that attract considerable wildlife interest, from wildfowl and wading birds in the winter to dragonflies and butterflies in the summer. The hide offers views over a creek in the lower estuary, as well as the marsh. In the winter months this is a great place to look for kingfishers and small waders, such as Redshank and Common Sandpipers, while the lagoons and scrapes on the marshes support feeding Snipe, Little Grebe and Shoveler duck. Seaton Marshes also contains the beautiful Borrow Pit pond, managed by the Countryside team on behalf of Axe Vale and District Conservation Society. Otters have been seen here, and the pond and surrounding ditches are full of dragonflies and damselflies through the summer.

Exmouth Local Nature Reserve About Exmouth Local Nature Reserve is a massive area of tidal sand and mud at the southern end of the Exe estuary – in fact, it’s one of the biggest Local Nature Reserves in Devon. It's also a globally important area for winter birds. In the autumn thousands of birds fly from the freezing Arctic to spend the winter months on the estuary, one of Devon’s most impressive natural spectacles. Dark-bellied brent geese make their way to this place every year in September and during the winter months, other wildfowl crowd into the estuary to feed - look out for huge flocks of widgeon and graceful pintail ducks. Only 25min from Exeter, once used largely for the carriage of limestone, the canal is now a tranquil recreational waterway for walking, cycling, boating and fishing (permits are required for the latter 2 activities). Meandering through 11 miles of pleasant mid-Devon landscape from Tiverton to Lowdswells, just south of the Somerset border. The scenery is constantly changing and there is a wealth of wildlife, including swans and kingfishers. Excellent for birdwatchers and botanists as well as all lovers of canals and countryside. Facilities for boaters have been improved in recent years, with the construction of a new slipway and landing stage. Minnows Caravan Park (near Sampford Peverell) provides all the services boaters require and Mid Devon Hire Boats and Moorings (near Halberton) provides long-term mooring and has a narrow boat for hire. The Tiverton Canal Company run horse-drawn barge trips for the public from Tiverton between Easter and November and also hire out rowing boats and electric launches. Cycle hire is available from Abbotshood Cycle Hire in Halberton, and the owners are happy to deliver/collect bikes anywhere along the canal.

South View coarse fishery consists of three spring fed lakes, set in an idyllic Devon valley. Willow Pool ( top pond ) A natural pond with an island surrounded by a wide variety of established trees and vegetation. The pond is stocked with carp to almost 30 lbs. A good head of tench, perch, rudd and roach. Kingfisher Pond ( middle pond ) Large population of carp including ghosties. Many roach, perch and tench and some gudgeon. Heron pond ( bottom pond ) Planned for disabled access and children in mind, having flat banks, making it ideal for juveniles and newcomers learning their sport . Has the widest range of species with a higher percentage of smaller fish. Set in six acres, all the waters have regularly produced good catches since they were opened to day ticket anglers over 15 years ago. This is a mixed fishery where the pleasure angler and the matchman alike can bag up. When the lakes are fishing well (and they usually are) 50 - 150 lbs in a day is possible. Pleasure bags of 20 lbs plus are commonplace. Through the winter months, quality roach fishing is supplemented by bonus carp and tench. It is genuinely a water for all seasons. Many anglers have caught their biggest ever fish, or had their best ever total catch in a day, however, most people come to South View (and keep coming back year after year) because of the atmosphere.

Just 20 min away from Exeter, there's so much to see and do at Powderham Castle you will be pushed to fit it all in to one day, but don’t worry as you can go back on another day for FREE!* For the very first time since Powderham opened to visitors in 1957, the tour routes and the tales told of Devon’s 600-year-old family home are changing. After years of study and with input from Universities of Exeter, Plymouth and Pennsylvania, Charlie and AJ (the new Earl and Countess of Devon) are excited to launch this fresh telling of the ancient and unique Powderham story. This season, visitors to Powderham will be offered a choice of two distinct and very different tours, both within a single ticket price. On the Castle tour you will see the many majestic rooms and hear fascinating stories about the Courtenay family as told by our knowledgeable and engaging guides. The tour lasts an hour and all of our guides adapt it to suit their audience, so it is an entertaining experience for all! The State Room Tour guides guests through the gardens, the grange and the grandest rooms of the Castle – the public face of Powderham. Visitors explore chronologically Powderham’s illustrious architectural history, from its medieval foundation, through Civil War sieges, Georgian, Rococo and Regency expansion, to its dramatic neo-Gothic culmination. All of this via secret doors, long libraries and even a hidden ballroom. The Upstairs/Downstairs Tour offers a different view – Powderham as a private home of the Courtenay family and their staff for over 600 years. Charlie and AJ invite visitors into never-before-seen family bedrooms, and offer a host of intimate and personal insights, spooky stories, and winding staircases used for generations. Outside there are acres to explore and discoveries to be made. Visit the Walled Garden, Play Area & Pets Corner (and take part on our nature trail on the way) home to our friendly Powderham pets and adventure play area (including our Courtenay Fort!). A donkey, pot-bellied pigs, goats, guinea pigs, chickens, sheep, and stick-insects, to name but a few, live here in a blissfully happy environment and enjoy the company of visitors, children and adults alike. Head to our American Woodland Garden (open between 1st April – 1st September) to enjoy a scenic picnic and explore this haven of peaceful tranquillity, adorned with exotic trees and a gothic summerhouse/folly. Take in the sights of the Castle’s natural rugged beauty on our tractor trailer rides around the grounds of Powderham. Get close to our 600 Fallow deer as well as lots of other wildlife or simply take time to relax and enjoy the stunning views. For a spot of lunch, have a bite from the Courtenay Café offering a range of light lunches, refreshments and delicious cream teas, as well as vegetarian and vegan options! We can seat up to 25 inside the Café with additional seating in the Coach House as well as outdoor seating so that visitors can enjoy the West Country sunshine! A family home and a great estate. Glorious landscape garden surrounded by parkland with fine 18th-century house Would you give away your family home for your political beliefs? Sir Richard Acland did just that with his Killerton Estate when he gave it to the National Trust in 1944. Today, you'll find a friendly Georgian house set in 2,600 hectares (6,400 acres) of working farmland, woods, parkland, cottages and orchards. There's plenty of calm space in the glorious garden, beautiful year-round with rhododendrons, magnolias, champion trees and formal lawns. You can explore winding paths, climb an extinct volcano, discover an Iron Age hill fort and take in distant views towards Dartmoor. Off the beaten track, you can discover three of Killerton's hidden gems. Nestled by the River Clyst sits Clyston Mill, a working watermill. In the heart of Broadclyst you'll find Marker's, a medieval house steeped in history, and just a stone's throw away from Killerton House is a 1950's post office with charming cottage garden. Killerton is full of adventure for families, with plenty of wide open space to walk, cycle and play on the historic estate. During the summer, Killerton runs regular events for kids. On-site café/restaurant. Picnic site.

Just 20 min drive from Exeter, stunningly beautiful, the Jurassic Coast reveals the Earth's story in unique geology stretching back over 250 million years. It joined other natural wonders like the Great Barrier Reef in December 2001 when UNESCO awarded it World Heritage Status in recognition of this unique landscape. It is a fantastic journey through millions of years in rocks of the Jurassic period together with older Triassic and younger Cretaceous rocks. Beginning at Exmouth's futuristic five metre high "geo-needle" at Orcombe Point, the startling rich red and burnt orange Triassic rock of Exmouth's cliffs were formed in scorching desert conditions millions of years ago. Other striking features along the coastline include unique quartzite Budleigh Salterton pebbles spilling from Budleigh's cliffs onto the beach below, and the dramatic rugged red rock stacks at Ladram Bay. The red Triassic rock cliffs around Sidmouth have been scoured and sculpted into fantastic shapes, while to the east of Sidmouth the Cretaceous Upper Greensand layer known as Salcombe Stone has been used in a number of local buildings including Exeter Cathedral. Glistening veins of gypsum can be seen in the tiny inlet of Weston Mouth, while at Beer you can see where the soft chalk has "folded", and also visit Beer Quarry Caves where a layer of particularly fine chalk composed of densely packed shell fragments has been worked since Roman times. Hardwearing and yet easily carved, Beer stone is highly prized by masons, and has been used in Westminster Abbey and Exeter Cathedral. As well as its unique geology, much of the East Devon Jurassic Coast lies within the East Devon AONB (Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty). It is a habitat for many rare and important plants, birds, and animals, and in the surrounding sea you may even spot dolphins and basking sharks. For help on visiting and exploring the Jurassic Coast, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, by bus, bike, foot, train and even boat. View our comprehensive map and Jurassic Coast explorer leaflet below. A good way to explore the Jurassic Coast is to walk the South West Coast Path with stunning sea views, or you can take special boat trips that explore this exciting coastline such as the Stuart Line Cruises Jurassic Coast Cruise from Exmouth. Download walking routes for free at www.southwestcoastpath.com. Search by location, distance and degree of difficulty (including routes suitable for pushchairs or mobility aids), or by interest, including wildlife, history and culture with a cafe or pub en route.

Exeter’s #1 attraction (as reviewed on TripAdvisor). Exeter Cathedral is a testament to the creativity, skill and devotion of those who built it. Dating back 900 years, it is one of England's most beautiful medieval cathedrals and one of the finest examples of decorated Gothic architecture in this country. It is most famous for its two Norman towers, impressive west front carvings and the longest unbroken stretch of Gothic vaulting in the world. Of note are the Minstrels' Gallery, the 15 Century Astronomical Clock, a complete set of Misericords and the highly decorated tombs, bosses and corbels. The library contains the famous 'Exeter Book' of Anglo-Saxon verse, the Exon Domesday and many other historical documents. Visitor facilities include a well-stocked shop and onsite café, serving a range of light lunches, afternoon teas and light snacks. The Cathedral prides itself on its choral tradition which dates back nearly 900 years. At 17.30 on most weekdays the Cathedral Choir sing Evensong. The service is free to attend, lasts 45 minutes, and everyone is welcome to attend. The Cathedral receives no funding from the government or the Diocese of Exeter. An admission fee is payable by visitors, which contributes to the £1.3million annual operating cost.

St Martin’s props up the black-and-white building of Mol’s Coffee House on a corner of Exeter’s historic Cathedral Close. It is one of the oldest buildings in the city, consecrated a year before the Norman Conquest, and was once one of six churches clustered in the cathedral’s shadow. It is the most important and complete church in the centre of Exeter, having escaped both Victorian refurnishing and the Second World War bombing which severely damaged many other Exeter churches. The first church on this site was consecrated on 6 July 1065 by Bishop Leofric, the same bishop who founded the cathedral in Exeter. Its tiny parish –- smaller than the size of a football pitch –- served the workers and traders who crowded into the three- and four-storey houses in the surrounding streets. The roughcast exterior of red volcanic stone with bright, white Beer stone windows makes it look a little bit like a fancy gingerbread house. Inside, it is simple and full of light. Look out for the communion rails with their closely set balusters designed, according to a 17th-century order from the Archbishop of Canterbury, to keep parishioner's’ dogs from reaching the altar! The gallery has painted on it the arms of the city and of Bishop Trelawny, a local hero in Cornwall, who was imprisoned for libel by James II. There are also several magnificent monuments in the church including one of Philip Hooper (a benefactor who donated the reredos) - splendidly bewigged, he kneels at a prayer desk with a skull and pile of books.
