The Midtown District of Reno is an excellent example of urban resurgence. This once neglected part of Reno just south of Downtown has a new life and a variety of restaurants, bars, cafes, shops and art studios. From the Mountain Music Parlor where you can hear and participate in musical jams to the foodie restaurants such as Laughing Planet, and Great Full Gardens, you can spend a whole day just walking around this artistic and funky part of town. Visit Junkee or Hello Yoga for great gifts, antiques and clothing and The Melting Pot for unusual costumes and Burning Man gear.

City/town information

This historic town in the mountains above Reno was once the world's richest city thanks to the largest gold vein ever mined, the Comstock Lode. Little has changed since those mid-1800s days, and C Street, the main thoroughfare, still looks much as it did decades ago. Among the top sights are the old town cemetery, the Bucket of Blood Saloon, The Castle (the only structure untouched by the fire of 1875), Fourth Ward School, Ponderosa Saloon, and Piper's Opera House. The best way to tour the city is to start at the base of the hill on C Street and work your way upward. This route also affords absolutely stunning views of the surrounding mountains. VC is a must-see for anyone interested in Wild West history.

The Reno area has several hiking trails that take both beginner and experienced hikers into the hills around the city. The Hunter Creek trail is one of the more popular hikes, but there's a good reason: there's a waterfall at the end. A waterfall in the high desert is hard to come by, but this one runs all year and is a nice end to this 5.2 round trip hike in the Sierra foothills. This trail offers views of the Downtown Reno skyline as well views of Hunter Creek, cottonwood and pine trees, colorful rocks and flowers in the summer.

The Reno Arts District and the Reno Riverwalk is located in the heart of Downtown Reno. This area is home to great restaurants and bars, shopping areas and a walkway along the Truckee River. At various locations along the river you will come upon several pieces of Burning Man art given to the city. There are also places to stop and watch the water and the various birds that like to nest here. Walk around and visit the local bars, restaurants and coffee shops including Cafe Capello coffee and Sierra Tap House. The central point of the area is Wingfield Park, a park on an island in the middle of the river. There are an amphitheater and access to the river as well as a few swimming holes.

Rancho San Rafael Park is the largest park in Reno with hundreds of acres that are home to a large dog park, playgrounds, an arboretum, gym equipment, jogging areas, and special event pavilions. Various botanical gardens show the range of plants that grow in this high altitude city. The Arboretum is a beautiful place to walk among the trees and landscaping. Dogs are not allowed in this area of the park, but it is fine for walking and jogging. BThere's also a museum that offers a look at the park's previous life as a working ranch, and a beautiful old ranch house that can be rented for weddings or other special events. One of the most famous Reno attractions is undoubtedly the Great Reno Balloon Race, which provides an average of 120,000 spectators with unique and visually stunning entertainment every year. Great Reno Balloon Race: The race first began in 1982 with a mere 20 balloons and has since grown to include about 100 balloons on an annual basis. The event has won multiple awards under the special events category and it continues to gain popularity among spectators of all ages. The event occurs in early September over three or four days, so plan accordingly! When you’re there, grab lawn chairs and lean back and relax! The event starts at 6.45 in the morning on the first day, and you’ll be able to watch the balloons in bright, beautiful colors sail overhead. They will keep going until the third day when the first winning balloons will land as the sun goes down.

This 2 mile scenic loop is an easy hike and the view from the top of the Rattlesnake mountain is beautiful. You get to watch the city view and the airport right in front with airplanes landing and flying by pretty close. Careful while going up the hill as it’s steep and full of rocks. I’d recommend wearing proper shoes and outfit as it’s windy. Overall, very refreshing hike.

You really can’t go wrong with any part of Lake Tahoe, as the whole thing is surrounded by stunning mountain views. The color of the water lives up to the name of “Emerald.” In the middle of the Bay, there’s a cute little island that is the ONLY island in Lake Tahoe. You can kayak, canoe, or boat to the island (NOT swim) and see the ruins of “Tea House,” where a quirky captain lived in the 1800s. Inspiration Point is a necessary stop on your way through the park—it gives you one of the best views of the entire Bay. Be sure to check out Vikingsholm too! :)

Pretty much everybody knows that you don't have to be a sports fan to appreciate a ball game so it might be worth taking in a game at the Greater Nevada Field. Home to the Triple-A Reno Aces minor league team, you can sometimes catch daily games there. Animal Ark is a wildlife sanctuary that has educational and recreational activities for the whole family. Providing sanctuary to injured and orphaned animals, there's enough to fill in the whole day here. Maybe the coolest part of the park is that the entire thing runs off of solar and wind energy. With a mixture of Nevadan animals from bears to big cats, everyone's favorite animal might just be lurking in one of the enclosures. Each with their own name and unique story. Those with difficulty walking needn't worry, either. Animal Ark provides golf carts for its guests to get around easier.

You might recognize Pyramid Lake from one of the backgrounds on your smartphone. If not, then you might just recognize it from the 1965 film, The Greatest Story Ever Told. Pyramid Lake and its strange rock formations that edge out from the water also has its share of legends dating back to the people who once lived on its shores. Where some people believe the legends surrounding Pyramid Lake to be little more than folk tales, the lake is an ancient remnant of the last ice age, and if locals are to be believed, is also haunted.

The race features amazing multi-aircraft races over three- to eight-mile courses. Currently lighting up the night sky as it towers over Virginia Street and Commercial Row in the entertainment district, the famous Reno Arch has moved about the city since its creation in 1926. Now in its third location, this iconic landmark was originally built to honor the Nevada Transcontinental Highway Exposition. After the exposition, the city fathers held a contest for a town slogan, and the phrase "The Biggest Little City in the World" was coined. In November 2009, the City of Reno replaced the 2,076 incandescent light bulbs in the Reno Arch with energy efficient LED bulbs, the colors of which are changed regularly to coincide with special events and celebrations in the city.

The world's largest facility dedicated to ten-pin bowling, the huge National Bowling Stadium covers an impressive 363,000 square feet in the heart of Reno — and you can't miss it, thanks to the massive 80-foot aluminum bowling ball affixed to its roof. Since it opened in 1995, this 78-lane stadium has not only attracted vast numbers of the sport's amateur enthusiasts, it's also a big draw for professionals competing in high stakes tournaments. It's also a popular convention space, capable of hosting up to 100,000 participants, and has also been used as a backdrop for countless movies... with bowling scenes. Among the best known of these are Kingpin, starring Bill Murray, and Greedy, with Kirk Douglas and Michael J. Fox. Mount Rose is actually the highest resort you can find in the area with its 8,000-foot height, providing 1,800 vertical feet of terrain you can ski on. There are plenty of different spots to enjoy skiing activities, and there are three different terrain parks to choose from: the Double Down, the Badlands, and the Pondo Park. The resort’s longest run measures an awesome 2.5 miles, but there are plenty of less intimidating slopes, too. Essentially, both highly-skilled, experienced skiers and beginners can enjoy their time on the slopes.
