The bombing of Darwin on 19th February 1942 had a disastrous impact on the waterfront. Much of the area was demolished leaving the above ground oil storage tanks vulnerable. The underground engineering challenges almost proved too much and they never really performed the function they were intended for. But they make a fascinating attraction. Walkable from anywhere at the Waterfront.

Katherine is 316 km south of Darwin on the Stuart Highway and is the gateway to Nitmiluk National Park. The gorge is the highlight with its collection of thirteen linked gorges that wind through the sandstone escarpment. Take a cruise through this majestic landscape, walk to the lookouts high above the river, picnic alongside the sandy beaches, or fly in a helicopter. Remember that there are loads of other sightseeing options. Attractions like the Katherine Hot Springs, Godinymayin Yijard Rivers Arts and Culture Centre and the Katherine Museum in town or Top Didj Gallery on the way to the gorge. If you would like to go further afield head south to Mataranka for the thermal springs or Cutta Cutta Caves. Or detour to Edith Falls just 60km north of Katherine (a great place for a swim and a picnic).

You can link a visit here to a trip into Kakadu National Park or just take a day trip from Darwin. It's especially great in the wet season when the spoonbills and ibis flock to the causeway crossing to play in the puddles of water. Take a picnic and set up in the bird hide.
In Just an hour you can be out of town, in the midst of rural life. Here are the sightseeing spots on the way to Dundee Beach. - The road is sealed to Dundee but be careful at the creek crossings. Dundee is mainly about the fishing but it's worth spending a little more time exploring the rural blocks to Namarada Drive for access to the beach and the memorial wall. Lunch at the pub is great with "bara and chips" a favourite. - Crab Claw Island is a 30 km unsealed road in and out to the resort. Stay the night in one of the elevated cabins with uninterrupted views of the harbour (and the resident croc!) or call in for a meal at the bistro. You can also take a Sealink ferry across to the resort for a day trip with lunch. - En route stop over in Berry Springs to visit the Nature Reserve and the Territory Wildlife Park. I love the free flying birds at the wildlife park.

Escape to the waterfalls and plunge pools, bushwalk alongside shady creeks or picnic by the billabong. Litchfield National Park is a beautiful and fun world of water. My favourite Hot Spots are: - Wangi Falls, swim in the huge plunge pool, check out the falls from the boardwalk, take a picnic and just spend some time here. - Tolmer Falls is a personal favourite especially the Cycad walk that runs along the top of the creek to the falls below. - Florence Falls - Double waterfalls force themselves through the narrow clefts of rock to fall into the shady, cool plunge pool. - Buley Rockhole - The river tumbles and turns around the trees and cavorts over the rocks in a burst of fresh inviting bubbles (in the Wet). Or sit for a while in the rock pools that refuse to move in the dry season. - Bamboo Creek Tin Mine - coming from Bachelor this is the first attraction. There's an easy loop walk that links the buildings and mine memorabilia. The site is still very much in tact.
