Brading Marshes nestled in the beautiful valley of the lower river Yar is a perfect place to unwind and enjoy the countryside. Wander among peaceful paths beside marshes and pools and through woods with spectacular shows of springtime flowers and red squirrels. Out of the cottage windows you will be looking at the hills of Culver Down. It is a wonderful walk to do (about 2.5 miles) or you can drive up .The views of the island are spectacular from there! You’ll also come across a pub called the Culver Haven INN which does wonderful food or is just great for coffee or a beer. Historically the whole site was a military zone not open to the public , however, now remains a monument and substantial fort owned by the national trust and occasionally opened to the public and several historic military features. From the monument you can take a further walk down to beautiful white cliff bay, a truly beautiful beach.

An absolutely beautiful beach that doesn’t get to busy! Access is through one of the two holiday parks which back this beach , parking is limited and facilities are limited so it’s access may not suit everyone but for others this only adds to its desirability!

Shanklin chine and Old Shanklin village are well worth a visit. The Chine has been an attraction for over 200 years cutting its way from Shanklin old village to the Sandy beach and esplanade. It has attracted many famous painters such as JMW Turner with its waterfall and lush vegetation. It is a seasonal attraction and during the summer months is illuminated in the evenings!

If I was to plan a full day out exploring the other side of the island I would pick ‘the needles’ . You do need to be relatively fit to walk up the viewing point as a car will only take you so far. It is also best viewed on a sunny or at least fair weather day. Whilst out this way ,there are many fine bays to stop off at and lots of lovely pubs and eateries.

Some really lovely places to eat here that’s not to far from the cottage! It is about 3 miles to walk or a short car journey! For those that enjoy seafood ‘ The best dressed crab’ is worth a visit. It is located in bembridge harbour , so the freshest catch is served on the waters edge! Also the crab and lobster is a lovely pub serving good food in a fantastic location near the beach. There are many good cafes and a few nice restaurants in Bembridge itself, and if you like a good pub atmosphere and a curry try the old village inn just a short walk from the high street.
