Hanging Lake is a Colorado treasure and a rare example of a travertine geological formation. It is located in the heart of Glenwood Canyon in t he midst of the White River National Forest. The 1.2 mile (1.9 km) trail is steep, rigorous and rocky but rewarding. This natural national-landmark features awe-inspiring scenery and gentle waterfalls! Each season offers unique views. I especially enjoy the hike during the winter with micro-spikes. In the summer bike through Glenwood Canyon to reach the trailhead or drive and park. Permits and info available at https://visitglenwood.com/hanginglake/

When the winds unexpectedly shifted on July 6, 1994, a wildfire on Storm King Mountain trapped and killed 14 young wildland firefighters. This trail is a memorial to those brave men and women who fought the blaze. Educational & difficult, but worth the journey.
