Neighbourhoods

The quiet leafy suburb of Moreleta Park, one of the most south easterly suburbs of Pretoria, is well located for quick access to Centurion, Johannesburg or Pretoria, particularly as it is so close to the N1, N4 and R21. Life in the upmarket Moreleta Park is, for the most part, pretty similar to other areas in Pretoria - large homes, pretty, flourishing gardens, and a fair number of townhouse and cluster complexes. But Moreleta Park is also attractive for the ease of living - Menlyn and Woodlands shopping centres are close by, and there are no fewer than three golf courses nearby - Woodhill Golf Estate, Wingate Park and Silver Lakes. Escapes over weekends are right on Moreleta Park’s doorstep. Irene, the beautiful little village that evokes scenes from the English countryside, lies halfway between Johannesburg and Pretoria and is a charming escape, especially on the second and last Saturday of every month. A village market, held in the grounds of Smuts House Museum, on the road leading out of the town, offers a range of exhibitors and wares, surrounded by vast indigenous grasslands and famous for its rustic “old-world” setting. If it’s the wrong weekend to attend the market, then you could head off to Rietvlei Nature Reserve, one of the world’s largest urban nature reserves, its 3 800 hectares still within the city limits but offering a complete escape from city life. The reserve has been restocked with game and is home to herds of wildebeest, blesbok, eland, springbuck, waterbuck, ostrich, white rhino, jackal and other sometimes elusive mammals like the porcupine.

The Pretoria Art Museum was established to house the City Council of Pretoria's Art Collection, built up since the 1930s. The collection received an early windfall in 1932 when Lady Michaelis bequeathed a large number of artworks to the city council after the death of her husband, Sir Max Michaelis. The collection consisted mainly of 17th-century work of the "North Dutch school",.[note 1] South African works included pieces by Henk Pierneef, Pieter Wenning, Frans Oerder, Anton van Wouw and Irma Stern. The collection was originally housed in the Town Hall. As South African museums in Cape Town and Johannesburg already had good collections of 17th-, 18th- and 19th-century European art, it was decided to focus on compiling a representative collection of South African art.
