Because they have one of the best hamburgers in town (wth provolone, candied bacon, caramelized red onions, grilled green tomatoes and smoked tomato-bacon aioli) AND they're a bonafide neighborhood place, right around the corner! Chef Louis LaRose takes food seriously enough to merit Lou's inclusion as one of the very best restaurants in town. And the house-made bacon is to die for. Let us know if you ever get the recipe.

Yum! The bright and airy, tapas-style restaurant also has beautiful pizzas, salads and entrees. Mediterranean + Southern cuisine, with an emphasis on the wood-fired part.

One of the best restaurants in town in an iconic, old drive-in, Walker's serves up chef Derek Emerson's creative, eclectic dream of seafood and steak. Weekday blue-plate lunches are more budget-friendly than dinner, and almost as delicious, but dinner is a standout. If there's a wait, swing by Caet, the sister wine bar, for snacks and drinks.

Wonderfully casual and open later than most restaurants in the area, Keifer's attracts legions of fans with its wide, breezy, wraparound porch, which is even heated during the winter months! Students, professors, longtime Belhavenites, etc. all enjoy the overstuffed gyros, cottage fries and justifiably famous, house-made feta sauce.

Of all of our many wonderful restaurants, Elvie's pretty much tops the list. It's beautiful, it's open all day (even for breakfast!), and the food is outrageously good--no doubt because of its talented chef, but also because ingredients are fresh, ethically sourced from local farmers and super high quality. I love its laid-back elegance, the warm staff and everything I've ever eaten there. Also, if you're just looking for a nice spot to have drinks, add Elvie's to the list!

If you're an Anthony Bourdain fan, you may have heard of the pig-ear sandwiches at Big Apple Inn, but they have so much more! Tamales! History! Burnt bologna sandwiches! Debate rages over whether the State Street or the Farish Street location is preferable, but truth be told, both are great, and no one will accuse you of missing out on a more authentic experience.

If you're downtown and looking for a hallowed, local hangout, this is it! Red beans and rice with some epic blues music on Monday nights--not happening during Covid, unfortunately--will warm your heart. On days and nights without music, there's plenty of local lore and evidence of great music hanging right there on the walls.

Unique cocktails created with house-made ingredients, this speakeasy-style bar is tucked behind a curtain in the vintage interior of Brent's Drugs, an old soda fountain and drugstore. The Apothecary features a beautiful marble-slab bar and a rustic, antique drugstore vibe, and, if you can find it, is well worth the search for the cocktails alone.

Not only is the Natural Science Museum right around the corner, but it also backs up to miles of nature trails that wind around a lovely, cypress-lined, oxbow lake. On pretty summer days, kayaks and day trippers dot the lake that connected Jackson's founder, Louis Lefleur, with miles of trading posts along the Pearl River.

Sightseeing

Mississippi's long-overdue Civil Rights Museum was worth the wait. It's a breathtaking, deeply thorough, and up-to-the-minute account of Black Mississippians' fight for equality. Because it comprises seven immersive, deeply engaging galleries, it's worth allocating considerable time--and wearing comfortable shoes--for this very special museum. You won't regret it!
