Mili Gorge is just 8 km South of Rethymnon. It took its name from the windmills that existed in the area and were functional till the 70s. The walk starts from the path that leads to the gorge under the new village of Mili. After a 30 minute walk you will reach the abandoned village next to the creek and you will see the beautiful gardens and the small river that runs through what is left of the many windmills that once existed there. Also, there is a tavern inside the gorge where you can ask for information concerning the area or enjoy a delicious meal.

Arkadi Monastery is located near the village Amnatos, 23km east of Rethymno. It is built at an altitude of 500m, on a fertile plateau with olive groves, vineyards, pine, cypress and oak trees. Around the monastery there are several picturesque chapels and from there starts the beautiful Arkadi gorge. The exact date of the foundation of the monastery is not known, but it is believed that it was actually founded by Byzantine Emperor Arkadios in the 12th century. According to another version, the name is taken after a monk called Arkadios, who first founded the monastery. Moreover, the monastery was called Tsanli Manastir by the Turks (i.e. beneficiary bell), as the Arkadi monastery was the only Cretan monastery that had the right to ring its bells. The initial church of the monastery was dedicated to Saint Constantine and some ruins of it are preserved in the northwestern part of the monastery enclosure. Arkadi is surrounded by massif walls that made it impregnable from the enemies and its rich fortification attracted the rebellious Cretans. Many Turkish and Greek documents are referring to the life and the adventures of the monastery, that provided educational, national, ethical and monetary support for the locals. Arkadi is certainly the most historic monastery of Crete and has become the most sacred symbol of the Struggle of the Cretans for Freedom. It is the theater of the tragic battle of 1866, which opened the way for the liberation of the island in 1898. Indeed, UNESCO has designated Arkadi as a European Freedom Monument.

Ideon Cave (or Ideon Antron) is located on the eastern slopes of Mount Ida (Psiloritis) just above the plateau Nida. The distance of the cave from Anogia is 24km and from Rethymno it’s 78km. The cave has not any special speleological value, but has enormous mythological and cultural value, as this is the cave in which, according to the legend, the greatest Greek god, Zeus, was grown up. Today, thousands of tourists visit the cave every year, especially during the summer months. The Ideon Andron cave is located at an altitude of 1538m, exactly on the steep cliff formed by the so-called Nida fault. Its entrance is to be found on the fault plane, while internal parallel faults can also be seen. Nice folds of the platy marble occur both at the entrance and at the large internal area. The cave is not particularly important from the geological point of view as it is relatively small and lacks cave decoration. However, near the entrance three majestic stalactites welcome the visitors. The cave has an area of 800 sq.m., which is divided internally into three rooms and the sanctuary. Access to rooms is on descending slope, while there are a few points where the visitor can discern some parts of cave decoration.
