Beach Clubs

These are the best tourist friendly beach clubs in Tulum.
A favorite hotel, it also just happens to be a great place to hang out for the day. They have really comfortable beach beds, hammocks, and an open-air restaurant to find shade and refreshment. Colorful and fun, La Zebra is an enjoyable place to bring the entire family as there is also a playground for the kids. The menu is reasonably/comparably priced for the beach audience and there is a wide selection of Mexican Maya fusion food and drinks.

This hotel / beach club is open to the public. They may charge you a small fee to sit on their beach chairs if you are not a hotel guest, but the atmosphere, beach, and service are worth it. and the prices are reasonable for the beach. On Sundays, they host a seafood BBQ, often with live music or DJ which is usually very chill. Wi fi is accessible on the beach if you must plug in...but please don’t. Food scene

Tulum is a foodies paradise!! Enjoy these dining options and prepare for deliciousness and fun! We have a range of recommendations here, from tacos and burritos in town, vegan and vegetarian, to fresh seafood and grilled steaks on the beach and all kinds of amazing atmospheres. Enjoy and choose wisely, you have some difficult decisions ahead!
The proprietor, Mateo, has a creative sense for flavours blending traditional American grilled items with a Mexican style menu unlike any you’ve ever tasted. Try the TexMex Burger, the Smothered Burritos or the Baja Fish Tacos (Mateo claims to have the best fish tacos on earth...and we think he might be right!). Everything on Mateos menu is appetizing and the prices are good for the beach road. Decorated with natural jungle wood, the Robinson Caruso style cat walks and multi-level decks are highlighted by the towering sunset deck. You’ll feel like a kid again! This is the ultimate jungle tree-house with an amazing view of the sea and jungle. There is also a sports bar cantina with a ping pong table and a dartboard. Mateo’s has a GREAT happy hour and sunset deck viewing from 5 - 7 PM, with 2 for 1 drink specials and live music quite often. Try a variety of their tropical specialty drinks including; The Coco Loco, Mango Margarita and the Strawberry Basil Mojito to name a few. Fun, fun, fun!

The food is delicious with the freshest homemade pasta and fish around and the drinks are fantastic! These aside ambiance is a night to remember. The prices here are a little higher and the portions are a little larger, so it would be considered a special night out. Make sure you bring a shawl or a sweater as the ocean breezes feel cool after a day on the beach. Posada Margherita is located on the beach road, just after Hotel Amansala. Cenzontle is open from 6 - 11 pm, they serve a delicious variety of Pre-hispanic Fusion dishes, in a beautiful and romantic atmosphere created by candles and the jungle; and their cocktails are all an explosion of flavors. This fine Maya dining eclectic menu changes nightly at our local and now world famous “Hartwood” restaurant. People have been waiting in line to get into Hartwood ever since the New York Times did a very nice write up on the place. Using only the freshest native ingredients and locally grown produce, Hartwood is a unique dining experience. A romantic jungle setting with candle lit torches provide lighting, while aromas from wood fired grill fill the air with tantalizing scents. A line starts forming between 2-3. La Zebra offers breakfast, lunch and dinner on their deck overlooking the blue Caribbean Sea. Not sure if this makes the food taste better, but it doesn’t hurt. The menu features seafood caught daily, abundant fresh local fruits and vegetables; a fusion of Mexican/Caribbean flavour dishes. Try the seafood burger with seared tuna, topped with fresh shrimp and served with sweet potato fries! While you’re at it, order a pitcher of sangria infused with local fruit or the fresh sugar cane mojitos. Don’t forget on Sundays, they start the BBQ early to prepare for Sunday Salsa Dancing! A fun atmosphere, family owned and operated and popular with locations in Playa del Carmen and Cancun, and now Tulum, Los Aguachiles offers wonderful service with a smile. Almost next door to Camellos, on the south end of town. Get the best Michelada in town. What’s in a Michelada? Worchester sauce, spice, chiles, lime juice on the rocks with a salted rim to which you combine your favorite Mexican beer...of course! Healthiest tacos in town, try their “Figurina” which is a lettuce wrap with your choice of ceviche, smoked tuna and many other yummy options. Great entree options with an incredible “whole fish of the day” platter.

Our favorite Breakfast Taco Stand. One of the most popular places for having an early and tasty start. Its open from 7 am and very likely by noon food will be almost over. Consejos para la ciudad

Cómo moverse

Town and Beach

The beach “Hotel/Jungle Zone” and the “Downtown” and surrounding jungle adventures. Both options have something to offer in an authentic Mayan experience in paradise. The beaches are amazing with plenty of chic upscale shopping, beach clubs and beautiful people. The town is charming and more authentic Mexican, including the prices, which are generally about half of what you pay in the captive beach zone. Enjoy them both, they have a lot to offer!
Cómo moverse

Taxis, Bikes and Rental Cars

If you don’t have a rental car, the most popular form of transportation in Tulum is taxi or bike. You can easily get around downtown Tulum and the beach areas by bike and have fun doing it. You can rent bikes for around $8 per day and less if you do it for a week. This is a really fun way to get around. Most bikes have baskets to tote your beer in and if you bring a backpack for groceries, you can get more beer in your basket! ALWAYS get a rate from taxis before taking the ride!
Cómo moverse

Escape from the Airport!

As you are leaving customs in the Cancun Airport, and walking out of the building towards your rental car or shuttle service, you will walk through what we refer to as “The Gauntlet”. Do not stop to talk to any of these tour guides, shuttle service providers, or taxi drivers. You will be caught up for quite some time as they try and sell you their services. I promise you will get better pricing working with the local tour guides here in Tulum. Look straight ahead, and get outside!

Fresh Produce

Farmers in Mexico use manure to grow their produce, not a lot of pesticides and chemicals. Because of this, the produce may look a little different than in the U.S. or other countries. It may not be as big or as shiny, but it tastes just as delicious. Fresh fruit and vegetable stands are found throughout town and on main street. Use sanitizer soak. Look for stands with brightly colored pineapples and various fruits in front of the store. Two of the best ones recommended are; Pool (located 1 block off main street behind Scotia bank) and the other is Gypsy Market on the south end of town.

Main Grocery Store

For those who might be staying in private homes or condos, the main grocery store in Tulum is called Chedraui and is located on the Boca Paila Beach road (beach road) approximately 1⁄4 mile from the stoplight. This American style grocery store contains most of what you need. They have many American brands, great produce and a large deli, bakery, small electronics and a sporting goods area. You can use your credit or debit card here and get the bank’s current daily exchange rate on transactions. There are also 4 ATM machines in the store.
Cómo moverse

Parking on The Beach Road

On the beach road parking is limited and areas where it is prohibited are well marked with a crossed out “E” as the Spanish word for parking is “Estacionamiento”. There are areas where one can park on the road parallel, but you are always better off finding a spot to park off street. Just be sure that the parking lot you choose matches the hotel or beach club you plan to visit. We are also seeing more paid parking areas along the beach road now.

Dining Insights

Dining in Tulum can best be expressed as cultural variety with authentic quality. Local flavors include Chile peppers, cacao, habanero, cilantro, vanilla, corn, lime, pineapple and nuts such as pepitas and walnuts and much, much more. Mayan cuisine is complex and is an important component of holiday celebrations and social events. During the Mexican holiday, Day of the Dead (November 1), foods such as tamales and mole are set out on altars for loved ones as well as served to family members and visitors. The food is meant to bind families and communities together.

Dining in Tulum Tips!

The pace of dining in Tulum is different than dining in the US, UK and Canada. Restaurateurs expect you to stay and linger. Most waiters are quick to pick up your dish on the table, don’t be surprised if you feel abandoned once the plate is gone! This is not to be rude but to give you time to digest before offering desert or an after-dinner drink. Waiters believe it’s impolite to present the check before you ask for it. While dining, don’t be surprised if total strangers nod their heads at you and say in Spanish, “Buen Provecho” (Pronounced “Buen Pro-vay-cho”). This means “Enjoy your meal".

Cenotes!

Tulum has many amazing cenotes both on the beach and surrounding jungles, which is a different experience than swimming in the ocean. Cenotes on the Yucatan Peninsula are part of the LARGEST underground river system in the world. There are about 1500 miles of underground rivers and cenotes charted by exploratory divers. They contain fresh cool water rather than salt water. A few nearby are Casa Cenote -MUST SEE (Hwy 307 north of Tulum - 10 minutes), Gran Cenote, Dos Ojos (Hwy 307 north of Tulum - 15 minutes), and the Coba Cenotes (Past the Coba Ruins well marked).
