At 4,478 metres, the majestic Matterhorn – certainly the most famous mountain in Europe – looms over the breathtaking Alpine panorama, the mountain of mountains. Triangular. A cragged rock “tooth” ranging into the heavens. Standing alone on the horizon. A magnet for alpinists, aesthetic emblem, mountain with ideal proportions. Rugged rock with magical light. Playing in a sea of clouds and horizontal coloring.

Lauterbrunnen is situated in one of the most impressive trough valleys in the Alps, between gigantic rock faces and mountain peaks. With its 72 thundering waterfalls, secluded valleys, colorful alpine meadows and lonely mountain inns, the Lauterbrunnen Valley is one of the biggest nature conservation areas in Switzerland. The very name ‘Lauter Brunnen’ (‘many fountains’) suggests the magnificence of this landscape. There are 72 waterfalls in the Lauterbrunnen Valley, the most famous being the Staubbach Falls. Plunging almost 300 metres from an overhanging rock face, they are one of the highest free-falling waterfalls in Europe. In 1779, Johann Wolfgang von Goethe visited the valley, and was inspired by the roaring waters to write his well-known poem ‘Spirit song over the waters’ Another deafening natural phenomenon are the Trümmelbach Falls in the ‘Black Monk’ mountain, hidden behind mighty rock faces. Up to 20,000 litres of water per second cascade over the ten glacier falls from a total height of about 200 metres. This spectacle can only be reached in summer by tunnel lift.

The Giessbach brook tumbles in 14 stages, over a length of 500 meters and out of the high valleys of the Faulhorn area down to Lake Brienz. Historic Grand Hotel Giessbach is located at the foot of this nature spectacle. The hotel is accessible by means of Europe's oldest funicular. The Giessbach brook has its source in the high valleys and basins of the Faulhorn-Sägis Valley and feeds the world famous Giessbach Falls, which tumble into Lake Brienz near the landing stage. Since the 19th century, there has been a footpath that leads to and under the waterfall. Since that time the 14 steps of the Giessbach Falls have been named after Bernese heroes. Grand Hotel Giessbach was built between 1873 and 1874 and is located in a 22-hectare park and garden complex. The Giessbachbahn was established in 1879 and is the oldest funicular in Europe that is only used by tourists. The train connects the landing stage of "Giessbach See" (Lake Brienz) with the hotel, which is situated approximately 100 meters above the lake.

With a height of nearly 300 meters, Staubbach Falls is the third highest waterfall in Switzerland. In the summer warm winds swirl the waters around, so that the Falls spray in all directions. These droplets of water spray gave the brook and the waterfall its name. (Staub = dust) Early on romantics and nature lovers made a pilgrimage to Staubbach Falls at Lauterbrunnen, one of the highest free falling waterfalls in Europe. The poet Johann Wolfgang von Goethe is said to have been inspired to write his poem "Song of the Spirits over the Waters" by the Falls. Staubbach Falls is one of the 72 waterfalls of the Lauterbrunnen Valley and is located right next to further water spectacles such as the Trümmelbach Falls, which are cut into rock. In the summer the latter Falls are accessible by means of a narrow path and a rock balcony. Info panels offer historic and scientific background information on these natural phenomena.

The old part of town and the Stadthaus Unterseen have developed into a sort of hospitality hotspot in the Interlaken area. For centuries guests have been arriving and departing from the house in the middle of the square. Their stories are stored within the thick walls. Don’t be afraid if you think you feel a ghostly presence – we foster the old spirit, hospitality in its original meaning, directly and from the heart. In 2014 the restaurant reopened with a new concept devised by René Schudel: alpine classics from the kitchen, wines from Switzerland and three regional beers on tap. In the summer the terrace is where it all happens!
