Wineries

Family owned, Leeuwin Estate, one of the five founding wineries of the now famous Margaret River district of Western Australia, is under the direction of two generations who work with a team of highly skilled winemakers to consistently produce wines ranking alongside the world's finest
Bill Ullinger founded the business in 1977 when he purchased the land, cleared it and planted the first 20 acres of vines. Since then, Redgate has grown into a 55 acre vineyard with its own winery, cellar door and enviable reputation for producing boutique wines of premium quality.

MICHAEL'S VISION 150 years of farming underpin my family's dedication to Voyager Estate. Our viticulture and winemaking bring everything I love about agriculture together in one enterprise. I settled on our special site in Stevens Valley because it had the ideal characteristics to create wines that are at home amongst the world's best. Its geology is the oldest in Australia and the gravel soils, microclimate, aspect and consistent maritime influence make up the foundations of the distinctive Voyager Estate style. The final step in the journey is the best - inviting everyone to come and enjoy a glass with us in Margaret River. The perfect combination of food, wine and the warmth of family and friends is what a visit to Voyager Estate is about. From the flawless Cape Dutch architecture and stunning gardens, to the spectacular Wine Room and award-winning Restaurant, every feature of the Estate is designed to give you an inspirational experience. “Cape Mentelle is firing on all cylinders, with the winemaking team fully capitalising on the extensive and largely mature vineyards, which obviate the need for contract-grown fruit. Cape Mentelle is one of those knocking on the door of the Winery of the Year Award.”

The McHenry and the Hohnen families have a long history of grape growing and winemaking in the Margaret River region. They joined forces in 2004 to create McHenry Hohnen with the aim of producing exciting wines that are honest to their region, site and varietal origins. Fast forward to today and McHenry Hohnen is still very much a family winery. But we're counting everyone who works, makes, grows and drinks with us as part of the family.

Surfers Point Prevelly is the reason Margaret River has grown from a tiny outback town to a region filled with the spirit of adventure. If you are an experienced surfer, you will already know why you are stopping here. If you want to see surfing, this is the spot to watch the way Australians handle some of the best Indian Ocean waves.

Caves

Lake Cave is seriously spectacular. It’s set in lush karri forest, has a dramatic sinkhole entrance, and a ‘suspended table’ crystal decoration hanging above a permanent lake. The most actively dripping cave in the region, it’s remarkably peaceful hearing the drips. It’s the smallest but deepest cave, with 325 stairs in all. The stairways are designed so that visitors only have to tackle a moderate number of stairs between rests – and the scenery from the first to the last step is your stunning reward. Your guide will keep the group together as you venture through the cave, which can be a challenge for younger children but great for older kids who are keen to learn.

Mammoth Cave is home to the Megafauna fossils – giant creatures that roamed the forest 50 000 years ago. Tasmanian devil and thylacine bones have also been unearthed. It’s a self-guided cave experience with an audio headset available. Cruise through at your own speed – you decide how many stairs to climb. from zero to a few hundred, and while you explore let the bones and fossils on display drive your imagination. The first chamber is wheelchair accessible. There are stairs further on, and eventually you leave the cave through a doline. Finish the tour with a walk along the Marri Trail, across Caves Road and back to the car park.

Around 30 mins drive. Set among the cowering Karri forests of Augusta, Jewel Cave is the largest show cave in Western Australia and home to one of the longest straw stalactites in Australia. Tours are fully guided and last for an hour, which makes it better for older kids who are happy to stay with the group. There are some tight spots where you need to duck down, but there are fewer stairs than Lake or Ngilgi Cave. The delicate crystal formations and excellent commentary make this an educational and breathtaking experience.

For children

Luckily having kids in tow doesn’t mean you have to skip the joys of wine tasting, as so many of the Margaret River wineries have child-friendly facilities. From kids menus in the restaurants, to toy boxes in the tasting rooms, to large grassy lawns with garden games, and even outdoor playgrounds, the Margaret River wine region is a great place for families with children. Some of our favourite wineries to visit with kids include: Aravina Estate Swings & Roundabouts Will’s Domain. Leeuwin Estate Xanadu Wines

Food scene

Brewhouse Margaret River is conveniently located just outside town, just a few metres on the left before Rotary Park (where the ‘Kate’ train is), as you drive into Margaret River from Perth. It is not far off the road but isn’t that easy to see when coming from the north so the turn off can be easy to miss at first.
