Catch and Release for 2019. Single and double barbless hook only The Owenea River runs for some 13 miles draining Lough Ea in the west of the Croaghs, into Loughrosmore Bay at Ardara. The Owenea is primarily a spate river taking around 1 to 2 days to run off after a good flood. This is one of the best salmon rivers in the county. The river has a run of spring salmon, grilse, sea trout and has a resident stock of small brown trout. The fishery consists of 9 beats on the bottom 8 miles of the river with good pools spread throughout the whole river. The beats cater for 3, 4 or 5 rods depending on the particular beat. The river has a lot of ‘nice fly water’ with the majority of fish being caught by this method. When in condition the river is one of the best in the country for grilse. The main grilse run starts in July with salmon right to the end of the season. There are additional facilities for anglers, including toilets and hospitality at the angling centre as well as access for disabled anglers along a section of beat 3. There is an ongoing programme of maintenance and upgrading of access, angling structures, habitat restoration etc. N.B. Shrimp and Prawn are strictly prohibited. Permits are available as Adult day permits €40 Juvenile day permits €20 Weekly permits €180 Juvenile Weekly permit €80 Owenea Angling Centre, Glenties Hatchery, Glenties, Co. Donegal.

Golfers have been travelling to Rosapenna since the late 19th century when the Old Tom Morris Links was ranked 3rd in the British Isles behind only The Old Course at St.Andrews and The Royal County Down Golf Club. With the addition of the hotel soon after the Old Tom Morris Links opened in 1893 Rosapenna is the true first golf resort in the world. In 2003 Rosapenna opened the second course the Sandy Hills Links designed by Pat Ruddy of The European Club fame. In its relatively short lifetime the Sandy Hills Links has been met with rave reviews and steadily climbed the rankings as it matures into one of the worlds finest modern links courses. Both the Old Tom Morris Links and Sandy Hills Links are ranked in the Top 50 of Golf Digest Ireland’s Top 100 Courses. The Sandy Hills Links was ranked No. 11 in Golf Worlds Top 100 courses in Ireland List 2015. Murvagh as it is commonly known is a magnificent par-73 with standard scratch of 75 off the back tees, measuring 6,753 metres true test golf. It is a testament to the late Eddie Hackett ability design spectacular links courses. After completing Waterville and Connemara was given an opportunity flex his muscles on promontory in Donegal Bay. He recalled with great modesty "The greens are natural sites: only level of some them were adjusted by hand. All as I had do develop course what nature provided". One of the feature holes is 174 metres 5th to a plateau green with Donegal Bay in background and no bale-out front or sides, a truly magnificent hole. Narin and Portnoo Golf Club is situated in a beautiful seaside resort in southwest Donegal, six miles from Glenties. It is considered one of the most scenic 18-hole links courses in Ireland , with sweeping views of Gweebarra Bay. A previous layout (designed by Harry Hamill of Royal Portrush) on much of the site of the current club opened in 1905 but had ceased to exist by 1919. Launched officially in July 1930, Narin and Portnoo Golf Club is engagingly old fashioned, with a meandering routing over and around the dunes. A recent course development has increased the par to 73 and has increased the range of shots required to negotiate the terrain. A warm friendly welcome awaits visitors and societies to Narin and Portnoo Golf Club and it is ideal for year-round golf.
