Matarangi peninsula stretches 4.5km and offers a picture perfect white sandy beach which provides safe swimming all year round. The harbour also offers swimming, jet boating, fishing and bird watching, with an upgraded boat ramp, boat parking and picnic area. There are only a handful of north-facing beaches in New Zealand, Matarangi with its straight coastline is one of them. The setup is unique because it receives all day sun throughout the seasons and this sandy beach without rocks is also safe for swimming and surfing. Brilliant beach for walking & dogs are allowed off leash in the morning & evenings. Occupying the scenic end of the sand spit is "The Dunes", a Bob Charles-designed championship eighteen-hole golf course. The spectacular par 73, 18 hole golf course hugs the beach with sensational views toward the Mercury Islands, & Omara’s at The Dunes Clubhouse has a great indoor outdoor bar & restaurant with an outdoor pizza oven catering for golfers and non-golfers alike. The small shopping center with a 4 Square supermarket, wine shop, cafe & hardware/gift shop serves visitors well. With 5 Double tennis courts dotted around the peninsula a great game of tennis is within walking distance. Matarangi is close to many other Coromandel gems with New Chums Beach and Cathedral Cove & Hotwater Beach in easy driving distance.

Sightseeing

Pack a picnic & head to New Chums Beach named one of the top 20 deserted beaches in the world! The pristine northeast-facing beach is accessible only by boat or via a 30-minute walk on a track along the coast from the estuary at the northern end of Whangapoua Beach. A short drive from Matarangi, head to the northern end of Whangapoua Beach & set off across the estuary, over some rocks & into some native bush - you will emerge from a nikau palm glade onto one of New Zealand’s most spectacular beaches. The hills behind the 1 km long white-sand beach are undeveloped and covered in native bush, adding to its unspoiled appeal. In 2006, New Chums Beach was named one of the top 20 deserted beaches in the world by Britain's The Observer and highly rated by Lonely Planet and National Geographic.

Hot Water Beach is a NZ must do! Best visited two hours either side of low-tide, head towards an area near the rocks with a bucket & spade and start digging! A natural hot spring running under the beach at low tide will reward you with your own heated pool. Take care as the hot water is hot! At 64° Celsius you’ll need to cool it down with some sea water. Spades can be hired at the local shop. SAFETY: Hot Water Beach has very strong currents, dangerous rips and holes which can make it unsafe. Please swim between the flags and make sure children, friends and family are supervised at all times.

One of our favourite spots, especially for a swim on a hot day! Head to the 309 Road (either from Coromandel Town or just out of Whitianga) Right beside the road is a beautiful bush glade & after a 2 minute walk you will find the Waiau Falls crashing over a rock face into a pool below. There is access by tracks both upstream and downstream of the falls. This is a great spot for a swim. Directions: Travel 3 kms south from Coromandel Town and turn left into the 309 Road. Travel a further 7.3 kms along the 309 Road and right beside the road is the Waiau Falls. Other things to check out on the 309 Road: • Check out the Kauri Grove a few minutes further along the road • If you’ve got kids make a day of it at Waterworks a unique & quirky theme park set on 5 acres of native bush. • Head towards Whitianga & you’ll come across a Coromandel character that lives in the bush with around 80 pigs & piglets roaming freely.

Providing spectacular views over Matarangi, Kūaotunu and into the ranges behind on this walk through regenerating forest. The forest has been enhanced with a native tree planting program since 2010. Head to Goldfields Drive at the start of Matarangi and walk up the Old Bluff Road now only open to walkers & bikers. The 4.7km return walk is mostly an easy gradient & if it’s hot, jump in at Rings Beach for a cool down swim before returning to Matarangi.
