Sorrento is a very popular tourist destination on the Mornington Peninsula, located after Blairgowrie and before Portsea, just 90 minutes from Melbourne CBD. The cosmopolitan village is famous for its quaint heritage designer label boutiques, galleries, cafes, furniture and homeware stores. The iconic Sorrento Hotel with stunning views of the bay boasts some of the best pub food on the Peninsula. The beaches of Sorrento are as equally famous as the village, being on the narrow part of the Peninsula and featuring the contrasting front and back beaches. Looking out to Port Phillip Bay on the north side, Sorrento front beach features a lovely foreshore, and the iconic Sorrento Pier, which links the Mornington Peninsula with Queenscliff via the passenger and car ferry. Sorrento Back Beach, on the south side of the village, is a spectacular ocean with safe swimming areas looking out onto Bass Strait. There are a number of stunning walking tracks which wind both along the foreshore and into the hills and native bushland. Sorrento is a beautiful coastal town, and a great central location to holiday on the Mornington Peninsula. In contrast to its neighbouring suburbs, Sorrento has many apartments to rent, if this is the accommodation preference over holiday homes, of which it also has an abundance.

The prestigious seaside township of Portsea is located at the tip of the Mornington Peninsula. A fantastic coastal location to holiday, Portsea features stunning scenic beaches and striking coastal walks and, being an easy 90 minutes drive from Melbourne CBD, it is where many of Melbourne’s most affluent have positioned weekenders and holiday homes. Bordering the Point Nepean National Park, Portsea’s position boasts the uniqueness of having contrasting beachfronts, with both the calm clear waters of Port Phillip Bay at the front, and the roaring ocean beaches of Portsea Back Beach. There is so much to do, see and explore in Portsea. Take in the historical significance of Fort Nepean, with its fascinating labyrinth of nineteen century tunnels and forts, or visit the Quarantine Station, both of which were part of an army base which was initially off limits to the public. Take a peek at how the other half live by strolling “Millionaire’s Walk” along the clifftop to get a glimpse into the most imposing mansions, or explore peaceful bays, wild coastlines and tranquil bush in one of the very many other walks Portsea has to offer. Enjoy a long lunch or relax on the lawn at the newly refurbished iconic Portsea Hotel, which overlooks the grand and historic Portsea Pier and beyond, or experience an abundance of water-based activities including surfing the ocean beaches, learning to dive, touring the bay by jetski or exploring the reefs and coastal wrecks by boat.

Archaeological site where the British first tried to colonize Victoria, with a history exhibit. At the beginning of the 19th century, the British government decided to establish a settlement at Port Phillip and Sullivan Bay was chosen because of its strategic location near the entrance of the Bay. The settlement is significant because it was the first attempt to settle Europeans permanently in what is now Victoria. A small part of Collins Settlement Historic Site was acquired in 1982 by the State Governement, with the help of public donations. Friends of Collins Settlement Sorrento Inc. assist with managing the area. Things to see and do - Explore the revegetated area and absorb the history of Victoria's first settlement - Visit the Nepean Historical Society Museum in Sorrento
