Sightseeing

Great spot in the summer for swimming, walking dogs, picnicking, boating, paddleboarding and more. And it's way less crowded than Lake Tahoe (and arguably just as beautiful).

Wednesday nights in the summers, they have free live music in the park. Bring a blanket, some beer (but leave the dogs at home) and enjoy the music!

Arguably the best terrain to ski in North Lake Tahoe. It attracts hikers in the summer and world-class skiers and snowboarders in the winter. It's kind of our main attraction.

If you've never seen Lake Tahoe up close, the nearest spot to Truckee for breathtaking views is Tahoe City Marina. It doesn't cost you anything to go there -- you can park for free, and walk along the docks to take in the views. It is stunning. And it's time efficient.

Food scene

If you like good music, Moody's attracts funky bands from all over on Friday and Saturday nights. Sometimes Thursday nights, too. Their food is excellent, though it is on the pricier end for food in Truckee.

Reasonably priced upscale pub fare (oven-fired pizza, fried cheese curds, shareable platters) and delicious cocktails. It has a laid-back bar vibe but gets pretty busy on the weekends.

This is my favorite spot for first-time visitors. It's right on Lake Tahoe, by Tahoe City Marina, it has incredible views, and the BBQ ribs and mac-n-cheese are worth going there for alone.

If you love seafood as much as I do, you'll LOVE this little hole-in-the-wall shack just off the main drag. As a connoisseur of lobster rolls, I can say Morgan's makes an unbelievably delicious and buttery lobster roll, among other things they do well. It's worth a stop if you're into good food you can eat with your hands. They also do take-out. Drool.

Great selection of beers and they often have live music on the weekends. The food is okay - it’s mainly nachos (which are great) and sandwiches (which are mediocre).

Best coffee and quick breakfasts in town. My personal favorite is the Lox bagel.

Live Music

If you like live music, the Crystal Bay Casino just over the border in Crystal Bay, Nevada (a weird town that's seen a decline since the '90s) attracts some really incredible music shows. It's a great venue (standing room only) for dancing, and it's small and intimate enough that everyone feels like a VIP. Check out their website for upcoming music shows: http://devildogshows.com/crystal-bay-club-casino-events/

Shopping

Great shop for all your outdoor gear needs. If you get to Tahoe and find you've forgotten some sports gear, Tahoe Sports Hub has a used equipment section that can be helpful. They also carry new gear of all kinds, especially catering to backcountry skiers and hikers.

Consejos para la ciudad

Cómo moverse

Rent a 4WD or AWD vehicle if you are visiting in winter.

During snowstorms, the highway patrol will check that cars have 4WD or AWD and snowtires, or they will require you to have chains on your 2WD tires. If you don't have a 4WD or AWD car, you should come prepared with chains in your car if you are planning to drive over Donner Pass with snow on the weather forecast. If you don't have AWD, 4WD or chains, the highway patrol will make you turn around and you will be stuck until you get chains for your tires.
