You can walk to the top of Mount Kaukau from our place. A fairly strenuous 60-90 min walk up the hill, but with fantastic views of Wellington harbour and across to the South Island. If you fancy making it a round trip you can walk down to Khandallah Park and cafe from the summit and get the local train return to Johnsonville (5 min train ride).
