It's a great museum about CA. Plus on FRIDAY NIGHTS the museum's open late and there's a fun food truck, dance, music community event that's usually a hit with all ages. https://museumca.org/friday-nights

Restaurants We Like

Great food, service and environment. It's a good place to bring guests if quality food is priority. But, Park Street is best for small town ambiance and after dinner strolls.

It has a large menu. My son's favorite is the rice cake soup. Most things are spicy, but kid-friendly options available.

Our favorite breakfast/brunch. Even if you've never been to dim sum, try it! It'll be a memorable experience. But, get there at 10:00am so you don't wait an hour. Great for dinner too.

Food scene

Just about every restaurant in Alameda is family friendly. Here is a list of some by cuisine: Breakfast: Ole's Waffles - a historic diner Neptunes, Cafe Jolie & Home Skillet are popular Italian & Steaks: Trabocco recommended on Michelin. Everything is good. Vietnamese: Bhan Mae Vane(fancy) or Pho Sinh(traditional) Dragon Rouge has a good shaking beef Cambodian: Phnom Phen, the stuffed chicken wings are great Chinese: East Ocean - great Dim Sum on weekends. We go at 10:00am to avoid the wait which can be awhile, but it’s worth it. Sushi- Hashi Gawa - food is good, but new and service was slow. Be prepared or pick it up to go. Korean: All You Can Eat at Oghane Sandwiches: Domenico's, Santoro's, Scolari's Beer & Hangout outdoors : Almanac Brewing & Speisekammer Wine Bar: Wine & Waffles, Karibu, The Preacher's Daughter and a few local tasting rooms are also popular on Yelp Tacos: We like the taco truck in front of Guadalara Restaurant 1001 Fruitvale Ave. Oakland, CA 94601 ** Cash only and not recommended after dark Fast Food: In n Out Burger near Target FRIDAY NIGHT OFF THE GRID at the OAKLAND MUSEUM OF ART - This is a fun, family friendly food truck, music and dance community event. You can also get tickets and explore the museum which is highly recommended. **Oakland and Berkeley have even better food options. Yelp is pretty accurate as to what’s good. Anything on College Avenue is nice and fun to walk around. Lots of restaurants in Uptown of Oakland are very popular with young people and open later. We grew up in SF and both love food you can find almost in the East Bay. If there's a particular dish you're craving just message us!

Consejos para la ciudad

ALCATRAZ

Book your tickets for the ferry and entrance way in advance. Although, it's not in our top 10 because of the cost and the time it takes away from other exciting destinations.
Qué empacar

layered clothing-packable warm jacket

The weather turns quickly and with so much water the wind is always cool even when the sun is warm. Our warm season is typically September where temperatures are in the high 70's and sometimes in the 80's, but it's been warm more often.

Ferry, BART subway, Express O Bus to SF

The new Ferry terminal in Alameda Point goes directly to SF and is a 5 minute drive away. There are multiple BART subway lines that go throughout the Bay Area. The BART stations are nearby, but parking at stations can be tough and please be careful about leaving anything in your car. The AC transit Express O Bus to SF is nearby and reaches SF in 15-20 minutes. Google Maps Public Transportation setting will show you times and options.

REDWOOD FOREST

MUIR WOODS is the biggest and the best within 2 hours drive. If you plan to go to Muir Woods, make your reservation in advance. https://gomuirwoods.com/ But, we like the local hikes like the ones at Joaquin Miller Park. The hills used to be covered in Redwoods and there are still many of them within a few minutes drive. You will feel like you're in the forest, but don't have to spend all day to get there. https://www.alltrails.com/parks/us/california/joaquin-miller-park https://www.sftourismtips.com/redwoods-near-san-francisco.html

GO CITY PASS

We really recommend the Go City Pass especially if you plan to go to the Academy of Sciences or Alcatraz. There are coupon codes. You can hit all the big attractions around the area and save money. It makes planning much less stressful and a lot of the smaller attractions are quite good, but often overlooked.

ALCATRAZ FERRY/MUIR WOOD PARKING

If you plan to go to Alcatraz or Muir Woods, plan ahead. We recommend the Go City Pass if you're planning to go to Alcatraz, you can save money overall. The ferry books up quickly so tickets should be bought before you come. It's actually not in my personal top 10 because there are so many interactive great things to do in SF itself. MUIR WOODS - You will need to reserve a shuttle from the parking lot ahead of time. This is one of the area's biggest attractions. It's gorgeous, but there are other redwood forests closer, free and don't need reservations.
