Food Scene

This tiny little place has the best Japanese food in the Universe!. It seats about 18 people only, and it is first in first serve. Best time to get a seat is when they open at 5.30pm. The Bento boxes are amazing.

Embers is owned by 2 sisters of Italian descent. The food is wholesome, tasty, and the serves are HUGE. Make sure you try the 3 cheese garlic bread with balsamic reduction. The service also deserves a special mention - the waiters are attentive and super friendly. They are always pretty much fully booked, but if you go early you may be able to get a table. Failing that, they have a take away downstairs, and much of the food on the menu you can also get at their Pizzeria, although their wood fired pizzas are great to takeaway and eat at the top of the Zig Zags enjoying the sun as it sinks behind the city at sunset. Warning: You could fall into a blissful food coma after an Embers experience.

Restaurant, cidery and winery all in one. An award winning venue with a great eating area overlooking the orchards in Pickering Brook. The ciders are varied, and many, and a wee bit too easy to drink. Live music on the weekends.

Drinks & Nightlife

Quaint English looking pub in the main street. You could be forgiven for thinking you are in an English pub, as most of the UK locals who live here drop into the pub for a catchup. Nice food.

This is a must-visit-here if you are in the Perth Hills Wine Region. Husband and wife winemakers Josh and Rachel Davenport have spent the past 15 years developing this small and gorgeous cellar door with sweeping views down the valley. Their award winning wines are tantalising and delicious, and they offer wines that are not produced at that other famous wine region nearby that I shall not mention. Hmm, I think I need to open a bottle of Durif right now and pop some on my yearning palette.

Visit Mike and Lynne Sykes at their beautiful winery and restaurant in the Bickley Valley. Surrounded by Jarrah forest and dryandra trees on the Darling Scarp, and at an elevation of 400 m, Hainault is the highest vineyard in Western Australia and is in one of the coldest parts of the State. Using only hand harvested, estate grown fruit the Sykes produce palette popping wines to accompany the fantastic food in their restaurant. Dare to swill and sip their semi-sweet white wine, Forest Fruits, made from cool region grown Gewurztraminer. that packs floral, passionfruit and lychee flavours in your glass. Being a sweety, she pairs nicely with strong flavoured cheeses and spicy morsels.

Aye, aye, aye, aye....visit Audrey and Jim in their cellar door perched above the vineyard with sweeping views down the valley. Audrey will be found singing and making delicious delights in the kitchen, while Jim will be standing quietly behind the counter enlightening you about the best wine to have with Audrey's delectables. Go for brunch, lunch, or just for coffee and cake. The view is worth it. Oh, and so are your hosts, and the winery dog. Caution, the driveway is pretty steep. Park on the road if you are not a confident driver.

Parks & Nature

We are conveniently located to the start of the famous Bibbulmun Track, which extends from Kalamunda and snakes southwards, terminating over 1000kms away in Albany. The Bibbulmun Track is one of the world's great long distance walk trails, and it passes through the heart of the scenic south west of Western Australia. You could do a day trek from the start of the track and walk to Mundaring and return (if you are fit - there are a lot of hills!). Or walk one way and organise for us to pick you up at the other end.
